I wasn’t looking for a religion story this week.

Honestly, religion wasn’t even on my radar. There are plenty of other things competing for attention right now, and most of them involve politicians doing something stupid, dangerous, dishonest, or all three at the same time. Then I stumbled across a Pew survey, skimmed the headline, nodded, and was about to move on with my day. Is religion gaining influence in public life? Okay, probably. I’ve been conscious for the last few years. I’ve seen school board meetings. I’ve seen library fights. I’ve watched people turn curriculum debates into blood feuds and Facebook posts into constitutional crises. None of that seemed particularly shocking.

Then I kept reading.

That’s usually where the trouble starts.

The survey said more Americans believe religion is gaining influence than at any point since 2002. Fine. But it also found that most Americans still don’t want churches endorsing political candidates, don’t want houses of worship running roughshod through the political process, and don’t seem especially thrilled about religious institutions becoming full-on political power centers.

I read that section twice because it didn’t fit the bullshit I’ve been hearing for years.

The people who make a living arguing about religion tend to describe the issue as though influence and political authority are welded together at the hip. If one goes up, the other must go up. If religion becomes more visible, then political control must be right around the corner. That’s the story. That’s the fight. That’s the product these assholes are selling.

The survey wasn’t buying it.

What fascinated me wasn’t that the numbers seemed contradictory. It was that they only seem contradictory if you start with the assumption that religion and power are the same damn thing. They’re not. They never have been. But that particular piece of reality doesn’t generate clicks, so here we are.

The more I thought about it, the more it reminded me of every local government meeting I used to drag myself through. One thing you learn covering public hearings is that the issue people claim they’re arguing about is often just the vehicle carrying the issue they’re actually arguing about.

A meeting starts because somebody is pissed off about a book, a display, a policy, a prayer, a curriculum change, or a zoning request. Everybody comes in believing they’re there to discuss the thing on the table. Give it an hour, and the whole thing has gone completely off the rails. Now we’re talking about values. Then rights. Then fairness. Then authority. Before long, somebody is quoting the Founding Fathers, somebody else is threatening legal action, and Steve is explaining constitutional law despite having learned everything he knows from three Facebook memes and a guy named Randy with a podcast. By that point, the original issue has vanished under a pile of political debris, and what’s left is a fight about who gets to decide.

That’s why the survey kept nagging at me. It wasn’t telling a story about religion. Or at least not primarily. It was brushing up against something Americans have wrestled with forever: power. We have a long history of tolerating influence while getting royally pissed off at anyone who tries to turn it into authority. Those aren’t the same thing, and the fact that so many professional loudmouths can’t — or won’t — make that distinction tells you everything you need to know about what they’re actually selling.

Think about the churches you’ve known. Not the ones people use as props in political arguments. The actual churches. The ones trying to keep the roof from leaking, organize the holiday food drive, help a family after a house fire, raise money for somebody’s medical bills, or convince teenagers to put down their phones for fifteen minutes and interact with another human being. Whether you’re religious or not, you’ve probably seen organizations like that operating in your community. Most Americans don’t look at that and think the republic is hanging by a goddamn thread.

At the same time, Americans have become deeply, almost pathologically skeptical of powerful institutions, and it’s hard to blame them. Trust in government has cratered. Trust in media has cratered. Trust in corporations, political parties, universities — all of it, straight to hell, and good riddance to most of it. We’ve reached the point where half the country thinks the other half has completely lost its shit. Against that backdrop, why the fuck would religious institutions get some kind of special exemption from the suspicion Americans are directing at every other concentration of power? Because they’ve got nicer architecture? Because they serve donuts after the service?

That’s where I started getting genuinely pissed off at the reactions I knew this survey was going to generate. Before most people finished reading the damn thing, some were already celebrating it as proof that Americans want religion exerting more control over government. Others were treating it as evidence that the country is goose-stepping toward theocracy. Both interpretations felt less like honest observations and more like people cramming reality back into narratives they’d already decided on before their first cup of coffee. Pick your team. Buy the shirt. Don’t read past the fucking headline.

One thing years of legal research beat into me is that evidence doesn’t give a damn about your narrative. You can argue with it all day. Plenty of people do, loudly, on television, for money. The evidence just sits there waiting for you to catch up.

This survey feels like one of those moments.

Maybe the simplest explanation is that Americans are drawing a line that professional culture warriors desperately need to make disappear. They need every issue reduced to two screaming camps because that’s how outrage works. That’s how the money flows. That’s how you keep people too angry to think straight. “It’s complicated” doesn’t fit on a campaign sign, and it sure as hell doesn’t drive donations at three in the morning. But ordinary people live in the complicated part. They have neighbors who believe different things, coworkers who vote differently, and family members who attend different churches or no church at all. Real life forces a level of coexistence that ideology refuses to, and most people are tired of being told their actual lived experience is wrong.

That’s why I keep coming back to the possibility that Americans aren’t rejecting religion and they aren’t embracing religious political power. They’re making a distinction. They may not use the language political scientists would use. They may never articulate it cleanly in a survey response. But the distinction is there, and it’s been there the whole damn time, and the people working hardest to erase it are the ones with the most to gain from the confusion.

Influence is one thing.

Authority is something else entirely.

The more I sat with that, the more I realized how many of our political arguments eventually collapse into exactly the same question. Religion, government, corporations, media, universities, political parties — sooner or later, every fight becomes a fight about who gets to make decisions for everyone else. That’s where the tension lives. That’s where trust goes to die. That’s where people stop cooperating and start sharpening knives.

Maybe I’ll read the survey again next week and catch something I missed. That’s happened before. But right now, what strikes me isn’t that religion appears to be gaining influence. What strikes me is how desperately so many people want to ignore the distinction Americans themselves are making. The loudest voices keep insisting the country must choose — religion or freedom, faith or democracy, public belief or public neutrality, as if those are the only options. As if that’s even what’s being asked.

The survey suggests a lot of Americans looked at those choices and quietly said no.

That’s not a statement about religion. It’s a statement about power. And if that distinction sounds familiar, it fucking should.

It’s the same one we keep having to make about everything else.

Ever notice how every disagreement now comes with an amateur psychological evaluation?

You can’t just be wrong anymore. You can’t just have a bad idea. You can’t just arrive at a different conclusion. No, now you have to be lying. Or brainwashed. Or secretly plotting something. Or part of some larger tribe of morally defective assholes actively trying to ruin the country.

I was reading a Washington Post piece about Americans increasingly viewing members of the opposing political party as bad people, and halfway through it I found myself thinking, “Well, no shit.”

Not because the polling surprised me. Because I’ve been watching this happen in real life for years.

We keep calling this polarization, but I don’t think polarization is the right word. Polarization is disagreement. America has always disagreed. Hell, if arguing were an Olympic sport, we’d have enough gold medals to build a second Fort Knox. We’ve fought over taxes, religion, wars, schools, immigration, unions, civil rights, foreign policy, and approximately seventeen thousand other things. Arguing isn’t the problem.

What we’re dealing with now feels different.

We’ve stopped assuming people are wrong. We’ve started assuming they’re bad.

That’s not a political problem. That’s a “how the fuck do you maintain a society?” problem.

What struck me about the Washington Post data wasn’t what it said. It was how familiar it felt. You’ve probably seen it too. Maybe it was at Thanksgiving. Maybe it was on Facebook. Maybe it was at work. Maybe it was standing in line somewhere when a casual conversation suddenly turned into an ideological background check. One minute, people are talking. The next minute, somebody is being treated like they personally caused inflation, climate change, the national debt, and the cancellation of your favorite television show.

The crazy part is how normal this feels now. We barely notice it. Somebody says something we don’t like, and instead of wondering why they believe it, we immediately start questioning their motives. We don’t ask whether they’re mistaken. We ask what they’re trying to pull. We don’t wonder whether they reached a different conclusion. We wonder what kind of person would reach that conclusion in the first place.

That’s a hell of a shift, and frankly, it’s more than a little fucking disturbing.

Long before I spent years buried in legal research and court records, my first job in radio was covering town meetings, school board meetings, county government meetings, and all the other assignments guaranteed to convince young journalists that glamour was not included in the compensation package.

I eventually moved into the anchor chair and later became a news director, but those early years sitting through zoning disputes, budget hearings, and public comment sessions taught me something I’ve never forgotten.

If you’ve never attended a four-hour town meeting about drainage, parking, snow removal, zoning setbacks, or whether the new stop sign should be twelve feet farther to the left, count your fucking blessings. Those meetings can make a hostage negotiation look like premium entertainment. After a while, you start rooting for a fire alarm, a power outage, or the sudden appearance of a loose goat just so something unexpected happens.

But as mind-numbingly dull as some of those meetings could be, they taught me something important.

People argued constantly. They got angry. They interrupted each other. They rolled their eyes. They occasionally acted like complete assholes. If you’ve ever attended a contentious local government meeting, you know exactly what I’m talking about. But there was still a line. The school board member who opposed your proposal wasn’t automatically evil. The neighbor who wanted a different zoning decision wasn’t automatically your enemy. The guy speaking during public comment wasn’t presumed to be part of a secret conspiracy. People disagreed, sometimes loudly and sometimes passionately, but there was still an underlying assumption that most of them were trying to do what they thought was right.

I’m not sure we still have that anymore, and if I’m being honest, that scares the shit out of me more than most of the political stories I write about.

Politicians come and go. Scandals come and go. Administrations come and go. Trust is different. Trust is infrastructure. It’s the invisible shit that allows everything else to function. You don’t really notice it when it’s working any more than you notice the foundation underneath your house. You notice it when it starts cracking.

What worries me is that the damage doesn’t stay in politics. It follows us home.

Friendships get smaller. Families start tiptoeing around the whole subject. Conversations get guarded, and then they get shorter, and then they stop happening. Social circles shrink. People stop saying what they really think because they’ve decided the risk isn’t worth the headache, the argument, or the inevitable assumption that they’re secretly some kind of bastard. Most of that doesn’t happen through some dramatic explosion. It happens quietly through missed invitations, avoided conversations, and friendships that gradually become people you used to know.

There are people I no longer discuss certain subjects with because I already know how the conversation is going to go. Not because either of us is going to change the other’s mind. Because the moment one of us says something the other doesn’t like, there’s a good chance we’ll stop talking about the issue and start talking about motives. Once that happens, the discussion is over. You’re no longer debating an idea. You’re defending your character.

And that’s where this stops being a political story and starts being a human story.

Curiosity requires the possibility that the other person arrived at their conclusion honestly. It requires enough humility to admit their experiences might have taught them something yours didn’t. Once you’ve decided somebody is stupid, malicious, brainwashed, or crazy, curiosity packs its bags and leaves town. You don’t ask questions when the verdict’s already in.

Now let’s talk about social media, because holy shit did social media figure out how to make money from this problem.

The platforms didn’t invent tribalism. Human beings were dividing themselves into teams long before Silicon Valley showed up. What social media did was take an ugly human tendency and build an entire business model around it. The algorithms learned something politicians, marketers, and cable news executives have known forever: fear sells, outrage sells, anger sells, and contempt sells. Understanding doesn’t. Giving somebody the benefit of the doubt doesn’t. Calmly listening to an opposing viewpoint doesn’t.

Nobody ever became a billionaire by creating an app that rewards people for saying, “That’s an interesting point. Tell me more.” If somebody launched a social media platform dedicated entirely to thoughtful discussion and intellectual curiosity, Wall Street would short the stock before lunch.

Instead, we’re fed a steady diet of the loudest activists, the dumbest tweets, the craziest videos, the most inflammatory clips, and the biggest assholes the internet can locate on any given day. Then we’re encouraged to believe those people represent millions of our fellow citizens.

That’s a hell of a business model.

It’s also cynical as fuck.

And it’s a hell of a way to poison a country.

What drives me nuts about this whole conversation is how disconnected it is from the people I actually know. Most Americans aren’t spending their days plotting the destruction of democracy. They’re trying to survive the next goddamn bill. They’re trying to figure out why groceries suddenly require a small business loan. They’re trying to survive another insurance increase. They’re trying to keep the car running. They’re trying to figure out whether retirement is ever going to look remotely like the brochures promised. They’re trying to make it to payday.

That’s it. That’s the whole agenda.

The average American isn’t masterminding a secret plan to destroy the country. The average American is wondering what the hell happened to the price of eggs. And somehow we’ve convinced ourselves that millions of our neighbors are secretly monsters.

What struck me most about the polling wasn’t the politics.

It was the loneliness hiding underneath it.

Because a country doesn’t become healthier when everybody retreats into smaller and smaller circles populated entirely by people who already agree with them. That’s not community. That’s self-segregation with Wi-Fi. It feels safe. It feels comfortable. It feels reassuring. It’s also lonely as hell, and I don’t think we’ve fully reckoned with how much of our collective misery comes from this constant low-grade suspicion of one another.

And before anybody starts nodding along while mentally assigning all responsibility to the other side, save it.

This is one of the few genuinely bipartisan accomplishments left in America.

Everybody does it. Everybody thinks they’re the exception. Everybody can produce a stack of receipts, screenshots, stories, grievances, and horror stories proving why the other side is worse.

That’s exactly why the problem keeps getting worse.

A country can survive disagreement. Hell, disagreement is often how societies solve problems. What becomes dangerous is the moment disagreement itself starts being treated as evidence that the other person is morally defective. Once that happens, listening feels like surrender, compromise feels like weakness, and understanding starts looking suspiciously like betrayal.

That’s when the real damage begins.

I keep coming back to something I learned sitting through those godforsaken town meetings all those years ago.

Communities don’t run on agreement. They run on trust.

People vote differently. They support different candidates. They want different things. They argue. They complain. They lose elections. They win elections. The whole system only works if most people believe the people around them are participating honestly, even when they’re wrong. The same thing is true for friendships, families, neighborhoods, and countries. None of them requires agreement. All of them require trust.

The Washington Post data isn’t really telling us that Americans disagree. We already knew that. It’s telling us something far more troubling. Americans are increasingly losing trust in Americans.

And once a society starts assuming the worst about one another, the damage doesn’t stay in Washington.

It follows us home.

I was halfway through another story about a local newspaper shutting down when I felt my eyes start to glaze over. Not because the reporting was bad, and not because the journalists involved had done anything wrong. Mostly because I’ve seen some version of that headline so many damn times that my brain had already decided it knew where the story was going. Local paper closes. Journalism struggles. Advertising revenue disappears. Internet wins. Everybody laments the loss—the end.

You’ve probably seen those stories too. I know I have.

Normally, I would’ve read it, nodded thoughtfully for a few seconds, and moved on to whatever fresh insanity was erupting out of Washington that day. This time, though, something bothered me. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I wasn’t actually looking at a newspaper story at all. I was looking at a power story. Once I started pulling on that thread, I ended up somewhere a lot darker than I expected.

The question that sent me down the rabbit hole was surprisingly simple: Who the hell is watching now?

At first, I thought I was researching the decline of local journalism. That’s certainly part of the story. Newspapers have been shrinking, merging, laying people off, and disappearing for years. Advertising collapsed. Corporate consolidation hollowed out newsrooms. The internet rewrote the business model. None of that is new. What struck me was what happened after I stopped focusing on newspapers and started focusing on reporters.

Because newspapers aren’t the important part. Reporters are.

A newspaper is paper. A website is code. A social media account is an algorithm. Those things matter, but they’re not the heart of the story. The heart of the story is the person sitting in the back of the room taking notes. It’s the person reading the budget nobody else wants to read, filing the records request, comparing what officials promised six months ago to what they’re doing today, and asking questions powerful people would rather not answer.

In other words, the witness.

As a paralegal, I spent years around investigations, records, evidence, and documentation. One thing you learn very quickly is that people behave differently when somebody is watching. They behave differently when somebody is taking notes. They behave differently when they know there might be a record tomorrow morning proving exactly what happened today. That’s true in courtrooms, police investigations, corporate boardrooms, and government offices. Witnesses matter because accountability depends on somebody being able to say, “Here’s what happened, here’s when it happened, and here’s the evidence.”

The more I dug into this story, the more convinced I became that we’ve spent years talking about the wrong thing. The problem isn’t that newspapers are disappearing. The problem is that the people keeping score are disappearing. And when the people keeping score disappear, power starts behaving differently.

That’s the story.

Across America, entire communities now have little or no consistent local reporting. Researchers call it a “news desert,” and it’s an accurate term, but I think it accidentally hides the most important part of what’s actually happening. When most people hear “news desert,” they think they’re hearing a story about journalism. They picture struggling newspapers, declining subscriptions, and another casualty of the digital age.

What they should hear is a story about observation becoming scarce.

In some places, nobody regularly attends county commission meetings. Nobody consistently reviews public records. Nobody tracks local budgets from one year to the next. Nobody notices when the same names keep appearing on contracts, appointments, or development projects. The information may technically remain public, but information that nobody gathers, organizes, explains, or distributes isn’t much use to ordinary citizens.

The meetings still happen. The contracts still get signed. The money still gets spent. The permits still get approved. The votes still get cast. Government doesn’t grind to a halt because a newspaper closes its doors. The machinery keeps running exactly as before. The only thing that’s missing is the person sitting in the room watching it happen.

Think about what local reporters actually do. Most of it is boring. They sit through meetings that nobody wants to attend. They read documents that nobody wants to read. They compare public statements with public actions. They file records requests, follow paper trails, and ask questions that frequently irritate the people being questioned. Almost none of it goes viral. Almost none of it becomes a national story. Yet all of it creates accountability because somebody is paying attention.

That’s why I think we’ve misunderstood the problem for years. A newspaper is a delivery system. A reporter is oversight. Those are not the same thing.

Most people stop at the headline.

I started reading about Trump’s White House ballroom because I wanted to know who was paying for it.

That was it. No grand theory. No predetermined conclusion. I was trying to answer a simple question. The administration’s position was that private donors were covering the cost of the project, and as far as I could tell, that appeared to be true. Wealthy donors and corporate interests were reportedly financing the ballroom rather than having taxpayers directly cover construction costs.

Under normal circumstances, that probably would have been the end of my interest in the story.

Instead, somewhere along the way, I stumbled across a number that made me stop reading and start checking sources.

Fifty billion dollars.

According to Moneywise reporting, I found while following the donor trail, companies connected to the ballroom donor list later received roughly $50 billion in federal government contracts. Maybe there are perfectly reasonable explanations for every penny of it. Maybe every contract was awarded through a fair and competitive process. Maybe every company involved was simply the best-qualified bidder.

But if you’re wondering why that figure caught my attention, I don’t know what to fucking tell you. Fifty billion dollars ought to get anybody’s attention.

The deeper I dug, the less interested I became in the ballroom itself. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have built the goddamn thing in the first place. At a time when politicians routinely tell us there isn’t enough money for countless public needs, a massive new ballroom doesn’t exactly strike me as an urgent national priority. Still, that’s largely beside the point. If wealthy donors want to finance a ballroom, that’s an argument people can have on its own merits.

What interested me was the intersection of donor money, government contracts, and potential taxpayer obligations, all showing up in the same story.

The question that kept nagging at me wasn’t whether the ballroom itself was privately funded. The question was whether taxpayers were eventually being asked to participate in the transaction anyway. If donor companies later received roughly $50 billion in federal contracts and taxpayers were also being discussed as a source of project-related costs, where exactly are we supposed to draw the line between a privately funded project and a publicly subsidized ecosystem?

Years of legal research taught me that most investigations don’t begin with answers. They begin with something that doesn’t quite fit. You pull on a thread expecting to find a loose stitch, and suddenly you’re holding half the sweater in your hands, wondering how the hell you got there.

I started with a question about construction costs. Then I found Moneywise reporting about donor companies receiving billions in federal contracts. Then I found discussions about taxpayer-funded security and infrastructure costs associated with the project. None of those facts proves wrongdoing. None of them automatically establishes corruption. But together they create something that absolutely deserves scrutiny — and frankly, something that deserves a hell of a lot more attention than it’s getting.

Unfortunately, scrutiny has become strangely controversial in modern America. And I mean that in the most literal, what-the-fuck-happened sense of the word controversial.

You’ve probably noticed this yourself. People who once demanded investigations, audits, hearings, and document dumps suddenly become very selective about when those principles apply. The standard isn’t the evidence anymore. The standard is whether the story helps or hurts their side.

That’s a dangerous habit. Not annoying. Not politically inconvenient. Dangerous.

If a Democratic administration announced a major presidential project financed by wealthy donors and many of those same donors later received tens of billions of dollars in government contracts, conservatives would be losing their minds. Frankly, they’d be right to lose them.

If a Republican administration does the same thing, liberals should be just as pissed off. That’s how accountability is supposed to work. The goal isn’t to prove guilt. The goal is to establish confidence that public decisions are being made for public reasons. The moment we decide questions are off-limits because they make our preferred political team uncomfortable, we’ve already started abandoning the process that keeps power honest.

One thing that keeps bothering me about this story is how quickly some people move from “there’s no evidence of corruption” to “therefore nobody should investigate anything further.”

Those are not the same fucking statement.

The absence of evidence is often the reason people start looking more closely. Every inspector general, auditor, investigator, journalist, prosecutor, and researcher I’ve ever respected understood that. You don’t wait until the last page of the book to start reading the first chapter. You begin with the questions, and you follow them wherever they go, regardless of whose feelings get hurt along the way.

That’s why I find the public reaction almost more interesting than the ballroom itself. A remarkable number of people seem less interested in whether the arrangements deserve examination than in making sure nobody examines them at all. One side assumes guilt before anyone’s looked at a single document. The other side insists that curiosity is unfair, that asking questions is an attack, that wanting to see the paperwork makes you a partisan hack. Neither response does a damn thing for the public interest.

What would actually be useful is transparency. Show the contracts, show the timelines, show the bidding processes, show the donor relationships, and show the costs. If everything was handled properly, transparency strengthens public confidence. If there are problems, transparency exposes them. Either way, the public comes out ahead knowing more rather than less.

Funny how the people who claim everything was done right are also the people most opposed to showing us the work.

One of the first lessons I learned as a legal researcher was that documents don’t care who you’re rooting for. They don’t care whether you’re conservative, liberal, independent, libertarian, or politically homeless. They don’t care whose bumper sticker is on your car or whose campaign sign is in your yard. The record is the record, and your job is to follow it wherever it leads — even when it leads somewhere uncomfortable, even when it leads somewhere you weren’t expecting to end up.

That’s exactly what I was trying to do when I started reading about a ballroom. I wasn’t looking for a scandal. I certainly wasn’t expecting to spend my afternoon tracing donor lists and contract figures back through federal databases. I was trying to answer a simple question about who was paying for a construction project.

Instead, I found a much larger question that still hasn’t been answered to my satisfaction.

Why are so many people comfortable asking less of power than they used to?

Whether you’re talking about a ballroom, a bridge, a military contract, or a federal agency, accountability begins with curiosity. The moment loyalty becomes more important than curiosity, power stops worrying about explanations. And when power no longer feels obligated to explain itself, history suggests the rest of us eventually get handed the bill — and it’s always a lot bigger than fifty billion dollars.

The first casualty of blind loyalty isn’t truth. It’s curiosity.

I wanted to do something simple the other day.

Those are dangerous words in 2026.

Not because the task itself was difficult. It wasn’t. I wasn’t applying for a mortgage, filing a lawsuit, or attempting to assemble furniture designed by a Swedish sadist. I just wanted to check something in one of my accounts. The kind of thing that should take thirty seconds and exactly zero emotional investment.

Twenty minutes later, I was updating an app, resetting a password, waiting for a verification code, requesting another because the first one had wandered off and started a new life somewhere, and trying to convince a CAPTCHA that I knew what a bicycle looked like.

Somewhere in the middle of all this nonsense, it occurred to me that I wasn’t actually checking my account anymore.

I was participating in a fucking obstacle course.

The thing that struck me afterward wasn’t the annoyance. We’ve all become accustomed to being annoyed. What struck me was how normal the whole experience felt. There wasn’t anything unusual about it. In fact, that’s the weird part. The experience was so familiar that I barely questioned it until I found myself twenty minutes deep into a task that should’ve been over before my coffee got cold.

Maybe you’ve noticed this too.

The problem isn’t that modern life has become difficult. Most of the individual tasks aren’t difficult at all. That’s almost what makes them so irritating. Nobody wakes up in the morning worried they’ll be defeated by a password reset. The frustration comes from death by a thousand tiny interruptions. Each step takes only a few seconds. It’s the accumulation that gets you. A password here. A confirmation email there. A text message code. An app update. A permission request. Another login. Another verification. By themselves, they’re harmless. Together, they’re the reason a thirty-second task somehow eats half your lunch break.

And the strange thing is that we’re constantly told all this technology is making life easier.

To be fair, some of it absolutely does. I can deposit a check with my phone. I can order groceries from my couch. I can communicate instantly with people on the other side of the planet. Those are genuinely remarkable achievements. If you’d described them to somebody a hundred years ago, they would’ve assumed you were either a wizard or in desperate need of medical attention.

But somewhere along the way, convenience and simplicity stopped being the same thing.

Because the more I think about it, the more it feels like we’ve quietly witnessed the death of easy.

Easy used to mean you wanted something, so you did the thing and got the result. Now every simple task seems to arrive carrying administrative overhead.

Every convenience seems to arrive carrying paperwork.

Take that account login.

Once upon a time, you typed in a password and moved on with your life. Today the process feels like trying to gain access to a classified government facility. First you enter your password. Then you’re informed your password is incorrect. Then you’re informed your password has expired. Then you’re asked to create a new password that can’t resemble any password you’ve used before, any word found in the dictionary, or apparently anything a human being could realistically remember.

Then comes the verification code, followed by a second verification code because apparently the first verification code was lonely. Then comes the CAPTCHA gatekeeper, and that’s where things usually go completely off the rails.

The CAPTCHA always starts with an air of confidence that I find deeply insulting.

“Select all images containing a bicycle.”

Fine.

There are nine squares. One contains half a bicycle. One contains what might be a bicycle. One contains an object that could be a bicycle if viewed from the proper angle, under favorable lighting conditions, by somebody willing to make several generous assumptions and perhaps consume a controlled substance.

I make my selections.

The computer informs me that I have failed.

Now prove you’re human again.

Which is ironic because at this point, the computer is behaving far more irrationally than any human being I’ve encountered all week.

The more I paid attention, the more I started seeing this everywhere.

You don’t really buy things anymore. You create accounts. Products arrive with apps attached to them. Services arrive with passwords attached to them. Subscriptions arrive with terms and conditions long enough to qualify as Russian literature. Somewhere between purchasing the thing and actually using the thing, you’ve picked up three new administrative responsibilities and a user agreement nobody expects you to read.

And God help you if you decide you’d like to leave.

Canceling a subscription now feels less like ending a service and more like escaping a cult.

The company doesn’t want you to leave. The website doesn’t want you to leave. The app definitely doesn’t want you to leave. Everybody involved suddenly develops a passionate interest in your long-term happiness the moment you click the cancellation button.

Suddenly, everybody wants to negotiate.

“Are you sure?”

“Would you like a discount?”

“What if we cut the price in half?”

“What if we give you three months free?”

At some point, you’re no longer canceling a subscription.

You’re negotiating a hostage release.

That’s when I started wondering whether technology had actually eliminated work or simply moved it.

Because a lot of the tasks we’re performing today used to be somebody else’s job. The bank used to process things. The airline used to handle check-in. The store used to ring up purchases. Customer service used to involve an actual human being whose job was solving problems.

The work didn’t disappear. A lot of it just got reassigned to us.

That’s a hell of a trick when you think about it. Convince customers they’re receiving a convenience while quietly handing them part of the workload. No wonder everybody seems exhausted. Not because any individual task is difficult, but because every task now arrives with a trail of additional tasks attached to it.

Need to refill a prescription? There’s an app for that. Need to access the app? Update the app. Need to update the app? Verify your account. Need to verify your account? Check your email. Need to check your email? Log into your email account.

And suddenly, the simple thing you wanted to do this morning has become the only thing you’ve accomplished before lunch.

The funny thing is that we’ve adapted to all of this so thoroughly that we barely notice it anymore. Humans are remarkably good at adapting. We adapt to traffic. We adapt to inflation. We adapt to politicians. We adapt to all kinds of ridiculous shit.

What we don’t always notice is how much energy adaptation consumes.

Every extra step is small. Every interruption is minor. Every verification seems reasonable. But stack enough of them together, and you end up spending part of every day navigating systems that somehow manage to be both incredibly sophisticated and weirdly inconvenient.

That’s what keeps nagging at me.

We’re living in one of the most technologically advanced periods in human history. The device in my pocket is more powerful than the computers that helped send astronauts to the moon. I can access nearly the entirety of human knowledge in seconds.

And yet I still spend part of my week proving I’m not a robot to a machine that can’t reliably identify a bicycle.

That feels like progress in the same way a flaming shopping cart feels like transportation.

Maybe technology didn’t fail.

Maybe we just confused convenience with simplicity.

Convenience means you can do something from anywhere. Simplicity means you can do it without needing three passwords, two verification codes, a CAPTCHA exam, and a minor spiritual awakening.

We’ve become very good at the first one.

The second one seems to have wandered off years ago.

Technology promised to save us time. Instead, it often hands us new chores and calls them features.

I was sitting there with my morning mug of tea a few days ago, reading through a new Pew poll, when I came across a finding that apparently qualified as news: Americans increasingly dislike both major political parties, and the number of people who view both Republicans and Democrats unfavorably continues to grow.

My first reaction was, “Yeah, no shit, Columbus.”

I mean, what was the next groundbreaking discovery going to be? That people get annoyed when groceries cost more than they used to? That folks don’t enjoy spending half their afternoon arguing with an insurance company only to discover the answer is still “go screw yourself”? That voters eventually get tired of politicians promising miracles and delivering excuses?

The poll itself didn’t surprise me. What surprised me was how long I kept thinking about it afterward.

I’ve mentioned before that I spent a couple of decades doing legal research and legal writing. The single most valuable thing I learned had nothing to do with criminal law and everything to do with evidence. Good researchers learn to see what’s actually sitting there on the page, not what they hoped would be there. Documents don’t care about your politics, your preferred outcome, or whether you’re rooting for Democrats, Republicans, or the damn Green Bay Packers. The evidence is the evidence, and your job is to follow it wherever the hell it leads.

That’s why this poll kept nagging at me.

Because what I expected to find was another story about polarization. Lord knows we’ve been drowning in those for years. Democrats hate Republicans. Republicans hate Democrats. Cable news has built entire empires around that conflict. Social media practically runs on it. Every election is treated like the final battle between good and evil, every opponent is an existential threat, and every fundraising email sounds like somebody just spotted the apocalypse warming up in the parking lot.

But the more I looked at the numbers, the less interested I became in the people who hate the other party and the more interested I became in the people who seem increasingly unimpressed with both. That’s a different story, and the more I sat with it, the more convinced I became that it’s probably the more important one.

The thing that keeps rattling around in my head is that both parties seem to operate under the exact same assumption. Republicans assume that when voters become frustrated with Democrats, those voters will eventually drift toward Republicans. Democrats assume that when voters become frustrated with Republicans, they’ll eventually drift toward Democrats. It’s a comforting theory, but it’s also possible they’re both full of shit.

The entire political industry seems built around the idea that dissatisfaction has to go somewhere. One side loses support, the other side gains support, and everybody gets to keep using the same consultant presentations they’ve been recycling for twenty years. Nice clean math. Nice clean charts. Nice clean explanations.

But people aren’t math. They’re messy, contradictory, emotional, stubborn, and sometimes perfectly capable of looking at two available options and deciding they don’t trust either one.

The more I thought about it, the more it reminded me of two cable companies arguing over which one has better customer service while the customer is standing there wondering why the hell either company thinks it’s earned loyalty in the first place. I’ve called myself an Independent for years, but political homelessness isn’t quite the same thing. These aren’t necessarily moderates or centrists wandering around waiting for a perfect candidate to descend from the heavens riding a unicorn and carrying a balanced budget. A lot of these people have strong opinions. What they’ve lost is that their confidence walked out the door, and that’s a hell of a different problem.

If you’ve ever watched confidence disappear from a relationship, a friendship, a workplace, or an institution, you know exactly what I mean. You can survive disagreements. You can work through arguments. You can even survive periods where everybody’s pissed off at everybody else. Once trust starts leaving the building, though, the entire equation changes.

Talk to enough people, and you start hearing the same frustrations over and over again. Some think Republicans have become obsessed with loyalty tests. Some think Democrats have become experts at explaining why they’re losing. Some think both parties are trapped inside a self-reinforcing bubble populated by consultants, donors, strategists, media personalities, and assorted bullshit merchants who spend most of their time talking to one another while pretending they’re talking to the public. Most people don’t put it that cleanly, though. Most people aren’t sitting around discussing institutional legitimacy over dinner. They land on a much simpler question:

“When was the last time any of these assholes actually fixed anything?”

And honestly, that’s part of what makes it cut so deep. It bypasses the branding, the tribalism, the slogans, the campaign ads, and all the other political clutter and goes straight to results.

Because the average voter doesn’t need a political science degree to know when they’re getting fucked. If you’ve bought groceries lately, paid an insurance bill, looked at rent prices, or tried scheduling a doctor’s appointment, you know exactly what I’m talking about. People know when housing feels impossible for their kids. They know when healthcare resembles a hostage negotiation run by accountants. They know when politicians keep insisting everything is wonderful while their bank account is quietly begging for mercy. People know when reality and rhetoric stop matching, and once that gap gets wide enough, trust starts leaking out, whether politicians want to acknowledge it or not.

The more I looked at this poll, the more I found myself wondering if the political class is misreading what’s happening. Democrats see Republican problems and assume they’ll benefit. Republicans see Democratic problems and assume they’ll benefit. Maybe they’re right. But maybe they’re both staring at the same warning light and assuming it’s somebody else’s engine that’s about to explode.

Political homelessness isn’t the same thing as political apathy. The people showing up in these numbers haven’t necessarily checked out. They’re still voting. They’re still paying attention. They’re still arguing online, showing up to town halls, yelling at televisions, and complaining about politicians over dinner. What they’ve stopped doing is automatically extending trust.

And that’s where things start getting uncomfortable for everybody involved, including me.

Democracies can survive disagreement. Hell, disagreement is part of the design. They can survive ugly campaigns, nasty rhetoric, partisan knife fights, and all the usual political clusterfucks that come with self-government. What they struggle with is a growing belief that nobody running for anything understands what life actually costs anymore. Once enough people start reaching that conclusion, politics stops feeling like representation and starts feeling like performance. And once it feels like performance, people stop judging the policies and start judging the actors. That’s just what humans do when the show stops making sense.

If you’ve ever stopped trusting a boss, a company, or an institution that kept insisting everything was fine while your own experience told you otherwise, you’ve already seen the mechanism at work. The names change. The logos change. The dynamics don’t.

The reason this worries me has nothing to do with whether it helps Democrats or Republicans because, honestly, I think that’s the wrong question. The question that interests me is what happens to all that frustration.

Politically homeless voters don’t disappear because pollsters don’t know what box to put them in. They still have bills to pay. They still worry about retirement. They still care about their communities. They still want their kids and grandkids to have a decent future. Their frustration doesn’t evaporate. It goes somewhere.

Sometimes it turns into cynicism. Sometimes it turns into disengagement. Sometimes it fuels reform movements. Other times, it gets picked up by grifters, opportunists, and charismatic motherfuckers who recognize public frustration as a business opportunity. History offers examples of all four, which is why I keep coming back to the same point: the destination almost isn’t the issue. The vacuum is. Vacuums have a habit of getting filled, and not always by the people you’d most like holding the keys.

That’s why I don’t think the biggest story in this poll is who’s winning. I think it’s who’s leaving.

A growing number of Americans still care about the country. They still vote. They still pay attention. They still want things to work. What they increasingly don’t seem to believe is that either major party understands the lives they’re actually living. That’s not a polarization story. It’s a trust story, and trust is a motherfucker to rebuild once it’s gone.

The thing I keep coming back to is that the biggest divide in American politics may no longer be left versus right. It may be the divide between people who still believe one of the parties can fix what’s broken and people who’ve stopped believing either one can.

Maybe this trend levels off. Maybe one party figures out how to reconnect with voters who feel abandoned. Maybe I’m overthinking the whole thing.

But the old legal researcher in me keeps returning to the same place. I looked at the numbers expecting to find evidence of one story, and I walked away seeing another. The evidence wasn’t telling me Democrats were winning. It wasn’t telling me Republicans were winning. It was telling me that a growing number of Americans seem unimpressed with both.

And if that’s true, the fastest-growing political movement in America won’t be Republican or Democrat. It’ll be whatever fills the vacuum they’re creating.

Frankly, if I were sitting in a party headquarters right now, surrounded by consultants charging six figures to explain voters to politicians, that’s the possibility that would scare the living shit out of me. Because, unlike the poll itself, that part actually surprised me.

The thing I can’t get past is that this isn’t really a story about Democrats or Republicans. It’s a story about trust, and trust doesn’t collapse all at once. It erodes. It leaks. It disappears one disappointment at a time until one day everybody’s standing around wondering what the hell happened.

A while back, I found myself helping somebody untangle a bureaucratic mess. I honestly don’t remember which agency was involved anymore, and that’s probably because the agency wasn’t the part that stuck with me. What I remember is spending hours chasing an answer that should have taken minutes. There was a letter, then a phone call, then a website, then another phone call, then another website. At one point, I became so familiar with the hold music that I started wondering whether psychological warfare required congressional authorization.

The people on the other end of the line weren’t rude. Most of them sounded genuinely sympathetic, like they actually wanted to help. The strange part was that nobody seemed able to explain the decision that had triggered the whole adventure. They could see it, read it, and confirm it existed. What they couldn’t explain was how it had been reached.

The longer those conversations went on, the stranger the situation felt. Everybody involved appeared to be standing outside the same locked room. Somewhere inside that room, a determination had been made, a review had occurred, a conclusion had been reached. Yet every human being I spoke with seemed to be looking at the result from the outside rather than participating in the process that created it.

At first, I chalked it up to ordinary bureaucracy. Government agencies have never exactly been famous for their smooth customer-service experience. But over the next few years, I started hearing versions of the same story from other people. One friend spent weeks trying to understand an insurance decision. Another got trapped in an automated hiring system that kept rejecting applications before a human being ever reviewed them. Veterans described benefits issues that seemed impossible to untangle. People seeking housing assistance, healthcare eligibility, and unemployment benefits kept describing the same feeling. Different institutions, different paperwork, same mystery. You start out looking for the person responsible and somehow end up chasing a ghost.

That’s when it occurred to me that Americans may be having the wrong conversation about artificial intelligence. Most of us think of AI as a future issue. We picture self-driving cars, humanoid robots, and science-fiction scenarios where machines gradually take over jobs, industries, and eventually the world. Meanwhile, something much quieter has been happening right under our noses.

Automated decision-making systems have already become part of everyday life. Government agencies and private companies increasingly use them to prioritize applications, identify possible fraud, screen claims, rank candidates, and allocate resources. Researchers and civil-rights advocates have spent years warning that these systems can produce outcomes that are difficult to understand and even harder to challenge.

The technology itself isn’t necessarily the problem. Most of these systems were created to solve legitimate issues. Agencies face enormous workloads, companies process mountains of information, and technology can improve efficiency, speed up reviews, and help institutions handle tasks that would otherwise overwhelm them. But efficiency and accountability aren’t the same thing.

What keeps bothering me about these stories isn’t that mistakes happen. Mistakes are unavoidable. Human beings make them, institutions make them, computers make them, and if perfection is the standard, we’re all screwed before breakfast. The issue is what happens after the mistake.

A few decades ago, responsibility usually had an address. If an agency made an error, there was an office attached to it. If a company screwed something up, there was a department responsible for the decision. You might spend days fighting through bureaucracy, but eventually you’d reach somebody who could explain what happened, why it happened, and what your options were for fixing it.

Today, that process often feels different. The representative tells you the system generated the determination. The supervisor explains that the review followed established procedures. The contractor says they merely built the software. The agency says the process is functioning as designed. Everybody seems connected to the decision, yet nobody appears responsible for it.

That distinction matters more than most people realize. A society can survive bad decisions, inefficient agencies, and incompetent bureaucrats. What becomes much harder to survive is a system where responsibility becomes increasingly difficult to locate.

Think about the practical consequences for a moment. Imagine you’re a veteran trying to resolve a benefits issue. Or a senior citizen whose housing assistance suddenly changes. Or a single parent trying to understand why healthcare coverage was interrupted. The immediate problem isn’t the denial, the delay, or the error itself. The immediate problem is finding somebody capable of explaining it, because once that becomes difficult, challenging the decision becomes difficult as well.

That’s where this stops being a technology story and starts becoming a power story. One of the oldest tricks in human history is creating distance between authority and consequences. Kings used layers of nobles. Corporations use layers of management. Modern institutions use procedures, departments, and administrative structures. Sometimes those layers exist for legitimate reasons, and sometimes they create genuine accountability. But they can also obscure responsibility, and power has always preferred a little distance between itself and the people affected by its decisions. Technology simply provides a new place to create that distance.

When an institution can point to a process instead of a person, scrutiny becomes harder. When a citizen can’t determine who made a decision, appealing that decision becomes harder. When responsibility gets spread across software vendors, agencies, contractors, administrators, and review systems, accountability becomes harder to pin down. Not impossible. Just harder.

And history suggests that whenever accountability becomes harder, accountability usually loses.

Here’s the part that concerns me most. Nobody I know is worried about a robot becoming president. Nobody is losing sleep over a machine declaring itself ruler of America. The real concern is much more ordinary than that.

Here’s the thing that keeps nagging at me. A democracy doesn’t require perfect people. If it did, we’d have packed this whole experiment in sometime around 1792. What it does require is knowing who made the decision and who answers for it when things go wrong. If an agency makes a bad decision, somebody should be able to explain it. If a policy creates harm, somebody should answer for it. If a system affects people’s lives, somebody should be accountable for how it operates.

Those principles sound obvious until you start examining how many modern decisions emerge from processes that few people understand and even fewer can explain.

That’s why the AI conversation often misses the point. The danger isn’t that computers will replace democracy. The danger is that institutions will gradually place more and more distance between citizens and the people exercising authority over them. Most of the time, that won’t look dramatic. It will look like paperwork, automated notices, and endless appeals. It will look like a citizen trying to understand a decision and discovering that nobody seems capable of explaining where it came from.

The irony is that technology can absolutely improve government. It can make agencies faster, more efficient, and more responsive, and, used correctly, automated systems can reduce errors, expand access, and improve public services. But none of those benefits eliminates the need for transparency, due process, or accountability. Because once citizens lose the ability to understand how decisions are made, they slowly begin losing the ability to challenge those decisions as well.

And that’s where this story circles back to the guy sitting at his kitchen table staring at a letter that doesn’t make sense. The real question isn’t whether the decision came from a human being or a machine. The real question is whether anybody can explain it. Because democracy isn’t merely the right to vote. It’s the right to know who told you no.

The most dangerous government official is the one you can’t identify, can’t question, and can’t hold accountable. If power is learning how to hide behind algorithms, somebody still has to keep shining a flashlight into the machinery.

Untreated cancer. Serious infections. Allegations involving interrupted HIV medications, delayed specialist care, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, glaucoma, and heart disease.

That’s the picture painted by a recent Associated Press and KFF Health News investigation into medical care inside ICE detention facilities across the United States. According to the reporting, which examined thousands of court filings, detainees and their attorneys raised repeated concerns about delayed treatment, interrupted medications, worsening conditions, and serious illnesses allegedly deteriorating while people remained in government custody.

Federal officials dispute some allegations and point to medical standards that are supposed to govern detention facilities. Fine. Allegations deserve scrutiny. Facts matter. Investigations exist for a reason.

What I can’t get past is something much simpler.

How the fuck did we get to a place where “people in government custody should receive medical care” became an argument?

Before everybody runs to their favorite corner of the immigration debate, let’s acknowledge something that should be blindingly obvious. Once the government takes control of a person’s life, it takes responsibility for that life. Not partial responsibility. Not political responsibility. Responsibility. If the government locks the gate behind somebody, controls where they sleep, controls where they go, controls their access to doctors, medications, transportation, and treatment, then the government owns obligations that come with that power. That’s the bargain. That’s always been the bargain.

Look, you can support stricter immigration enforcement. You can oppose it. You can spend your evening arguing border policy with strangers online until your phone battery dies and your blood pressure hits escape velocity. None of that changes the question sitting at the center of this story.

What responsibility does the government have once somebody is in its custody?

Because that’s where I start losing patience with the conversation.

The second the letters I-C-E enter the discussion, a whole lot of otherwise reasonable people suddenly forget principles they apply everywhere else. If you heard about a nursing home resident being denied necessary medical care, you’d be furious. If you heard about a veteran trapped in a bureaucratic maze while a serious illness worsened, you’d be furious. If you heard about a prisoner waiting months for treatment while a condition deteriorated, you’d be furious.

Change the label to “ICE detainee,” and suddenly people start looking for exceptions. That’s the part I don’t understand. The underlying principle hasn’t changed. The only thing that changed is who the problem is happening to.

Once a detainee can’t choose another doctor, can’t drive themselves to an emergency room, can’t seek a second opinion, can’t refill a prescription independently, and can’t simply walk away from a bad situation, the responsibility equation changes. The government isn’t just enforcing a law anymore. It’s become the gatekeeper for virtually everything that happens next.

That’s not politics.

That’s custody.

One reason this story resonates beyond immigration is that almost everybody understands medical vulnerability. Most of us have waited for test results that took too long. Most of us have watched somebody we love fight with insurance companies, specialists, referrals, scheduling offices, or hospital systems that seemed determined to test the limits of human patience. We’ve sat beside hospital beds. We’ve stared at silent phones waiting for a call. We’ve spent sleepless nights wondering whether a problem was getting worse while paperwork moved from one desk to another.

That experience is miserable enough when you still have options.

Now imagine all those options disappear.

Imagine somebody else controls the appointments, the transportation, the referrals, the medications, and every other decision connected to your care. Imagine believing something is seriously wrong while your only real option is filling out another request and hoping somebody pays attention.

That’s what makes allegations like these so disturbing.

The AP reporting includes detainees suffering from illnesses that don’t politely wait for bureaucracies to get their act together. Cancer doesn’t care about staffing shortages. Diabetes doesn’t pause because paperwork is delayed. Serious infections don’t become less dangerous because forms are sitting in a stack somewhere.

That’s why these allegations deserve attention regardless of where you stand on immigration policy.

The deeper issue isn’t border security.

The deeper issue is responsibility.

Too many people seem willing to abandon principles the moment a politically controversial label enters the conversation. Standards that apply everywhere else suddenly become negotiable. Expectations become optional. Responsibility becomes conditional.

That’s bullshit.

Either institutions have obligations to people under their control or they don’t.

If the answer changes depending on whether we personally approve of the people involved, then we’re not defending principles anymore. We’re defending tribes. And tribes have a nasty habit of excusing behavior they’d condemn in a heartbeat if the jerseys were reversed.

The thing that worries me most about stories like this isn’t any single allegation. It’s the dodge. It’s the way people immediately try to change the subject. Maybe it’s immigration. Maybe it’s crime. Maybe it’s politics. Maybe it’s something else entirely. The topic changes. The dodge doesn’t.

Instead of asking whether an institution met its obligations, people start arguing about whether the people affected deserved those obligations in the first place.

That’s a dangerous shift.

Because once responsibility becomes conditional, power becomes a lot easier to abuse.

Power without responsibility is one of the oldest scams in human history. Everybody wants authority. Everybody wants control. Everybody wants the ability to make decisions that affect other people. Responsibility is the part they keep trying to leave behind when the bill comes due.

That’s why this story reaches far beyond immigration detention facilities.

Every institution eventually reveals what it values, and it rarely happens during a press conference. Institutions reveal themselves through what they tolerate. When delays become normal, when complaints disappear into bureaucratic black holes, and when serious concerns stop creating urgency, those things eventually stop being isolated failures and start becoming part of the culture.

Nobody announces that process while it’s happening.

It usually arrives disguised as routine dysfunction.

A complaint gets ignored. A referral takes longer than it should. A problem gets pushed to next week. Then next week becomes next month, and somebody else pays the price.

History is full of examples where suffering became background noise because the people experiencing it lacked power, influence, or public sympathy. That’s why this story should concern people who have never set foot near an immigration detention facility. The institution involved today may be ICE. Tomorrow it could be another government system responsible for people who can’t simply walk away.

The names change.

The mechanism doesn’t.

One of the easiest mistakes people make is believing rights and responsibilities only apply to people they like. The moment standards of treatment become dependent on popularity, citizenship status, ideology, ethnicity, religion, or political convenience, we’ve already abandoned the principle we’re pretending to defend. At that point we’re just picking favorites and calling it morality.

That’s not how a functioning society works.

A functioning society doesn’t determine whether people deserve medical care based on whether they’re popular. A functioning society doesn’t decide responsibility is optional whenever a topic becomes politically inconvenient. A functioning society understands that when institutions exercise extraordinary power over human beings, extraordinary responsibility comes with it.

That’s the entire point.

The AP investigation may ultimately validate some allegations, reject others, and leave still more unresolved. That’s how serious reporting and serious investigations work.

What shouldn’t be unresolved is the principle underneath the story.

If the government takes control over a person’s life, it inherits obligations that extend beyond enforcement, detention, and paperwork. Those obligations exist whether the person involved is sympathetic, unpopular, citizen, noncitizen, rich, poor, conservative, liberal, or anything else.

Power doesn’t get to keep the authority and abandon the obligation. A government that wants the ability to control people’s lives also inherits responsibility for what happens to those lives. The moment those two things separate, accountability starts dying, and people start paying the price.

Pride Month feels weird as hell this year, and not in the usual “some corporation slapped a rainbow on a logo and suddenly thinks it personally fought at Stonewall” kind of way. Normally, June arrives carrying the same predictable circus: rainbow capitalism, Facebook uncles announcing civilization has officially collapsed because a beer company hurt their feelings, and cable-news screamers acting like a flag outside a Target means America either just entered enlightenment or fell straight into the seventh circle of bullshit.

Most years, you laugh, roll your eyes, maybe mute somebody for a week, and move on.

This year feels heavier.

Not melodramatic. Not apocalypse-heavy. Just… off.

Because for a lot of LGBTQ+ Americans, especially trans Americans, Pride Month doesn’t seem to be landing like a celebration so much as legal whiplash. Instead of wondering where the parade is or whether somebody’s aunt will drink too much sangria and start oversharing family gossip, people are wondering whether the answer to basic questions about healthcare, military service, school policies, workplace protections, or legal recognition changed again while they were busy trying to survive another expensive goddamn Tuesday.

And before somebody fires up the Facebook keyboard of destiny and starts typing “OH SO NOBODY CAN DISAGREE ANYMORE,” calm your ass down and hear me out for a second.

You don’t have to agree on every argument involving sports, schools, medicine, fairness, religion, language, parenting, or any of the other cultural hand grenades politicians keep throwing into the room for fun. You just have to be honest enough to admit that uncertainty wears people the hell out. Imagine trying to build a stable life when the answer to ordinary questions keeps shifting depending on which court ruled, which agency rewrote guidance, or which politician suddenly realized your existence polls well with angry donors.

Reuters reported this week that a federal appeals court blocked part of the Pentagon’s effort to remove current transgender service members while broader litigation continues, even as other restrictions remain tied up in court fights. In practical terms, one part of government says one thing, another says, “Hold on,” and ordinary people are left sitting there wondering what the fuck they’re supposed to plan around.

That’s the part I keep getting stuck on over a drink.

Because after a while, people stop asking, “What does the law say?” and start asking, “Okay, seriously… what the fuck are the rules this week?”

And once you get there, the story stops being about Pride flags.

It stops being about hashtags.

It stops being about politicians yelling at each other for cable-news clips.

The story becomes instability.

That matters more than people want to admit because instability has a nasty habit of crawling into everyday life and making itself comfortable. It changes how people plan and how they trust. How safe they feel. You don’t even have to agree with every policy fight happening to recognize what uncertainty does to human beings after a while. It grinds them down.

Instability is profitable as fuck.

Politicians raise money on fear. Media companies cash checks out of fear. Social platforms practically run on outrage because angry, anxious people doomscroll longer than calm ones. Every legal fight becomes content. Every confused family becomes a talking point. Every court ruling turns into another asshole yelling into a camera and demanding donations before midnight.

Meanwhile, actual human beings are trying to figure out how to live ordinary lives while the ground keeps wobbling under them.

And before somebody says, “Well, that’s politics,” sure. Politics is messy. Democracies argue. Courts exist because complicated societies fight over complicated things.

But there’s a difference between disagreement and instability.

There’s a difference between arguing over policy and making people feel like they need legal alerts, emotional support bourbon, and a constitutional scholar on speed dial just to understand whether next month changes the rules again.

That shit wears people out.

And if you think this only matters to LGBTQ+ Americans, I’d argue you’re missing the bigger mechanism entirely.

Because once people get used to the idea that rights, protections, or expectations swing wildly depending on elections and lawsuits, the target eventually matters less than the precedent. Today it’s one issue. Tomorrow it’s another. The machinery doesn’t care nearly as much as the headlines do.

You know how trust actually breaks?

Not all at once.

Not with fireworks.

Not because some dramatic movie villain snaps their fingers and democracy explodes.

It happens the same way you stop trusting a boss who keeps changing expectations every Tuesday or a friend whose story shifts every time you talk to them. People stop assuming stability exists. They stop trusting promises. Cynicism creeps in because cynicism starts feeling safer than disappointment.

And once enough people feel like that, some loud asshole inevitably shows up promising certainty.

History has seen that movie before.

It usually ends like shit.

Because rights stop feeling like rights when they start feeling temporary.

They start feeling conditional.

Like permissions.

The kind of permissions that can disappear because somebody won an election and suddenly decided your life polls well with angry donors.

Maybe that’s what makes Pride Month feel strange this year.

Underneath the flags, the slogans, the predictable outrage circus, and the corporate nonsense, there’s a quieter question hanging in the air:

Does anything stay settled anymore?

Because a country shouldn’t feel like probation.

You shouldn’t need a lawyer, therapist, court tracker, and emotional-support bourbon just to figure out whether tomorrow changes the rules again. Whatever side of these debates you land on, a democracy works better when people trust the ground under their feet instead of wondering who’s about to yank it away for political sport.

That kind of instability doesn’t just make people angry.

It makes them tired, cynical, distrustful, and eventually willing to believe anybody promising that the chaos will stop.

That’s dangerous as fuck.

Pacino delivers that line while playing Satan like a Manhattan power broker who just discovered cocaine, luxury real estate, and his own reflection on the same weekend. It’s theatrical as hell, funny in a dark way, and somehow more useful for understanding modern politics than about eighty percent of cable news.

We’re talking about vanity so relentless it stops being personality and starts becoming infrastructure. Vanity that quietly seeps into hiring, revenge, aesthetics, loyalty, symbolism, messaging, governance, and the deeply exhausting expectation that the rest of the country should somehow organize itself around one rich guy’s emotional weather.

Because once you stop looking at Trump through the normal political lenses and start looking at him like somebody pathologically obsessed with admiration, image, status, and humiliation avoidance, a whole lot of deeply weird shit suddenly starts making perfect fucking sense.

Take the branding obsession.

Hotels. Towers. Golf clubs. Universities. Steaks. Water. Sneakers. Crypto bullshit. Trading cards. Bibles. Social media platforms. Endless merchandise ecosystems so sprawling they occasionally feel less like politics and more like capitalism after a head injury.

From the Department of Rich Guy Feelings here in Bastardonia: there comes a point where branding stops looking like politics and starts looking like somebody desperately trying to autograph reality itself.

For most politicians, branding supports the movement.

For Trump, the movement often feels like it exists to support the fucking brand.

That difference matters because politics usually asks voters to believe in something bigger than the person selling it. Trumpism often feels like the reverse. The man becomes the product. The product becomes the message. The message becomes loyalty to the man. Before long, policy stops being the point and personality becomes the point, which is how you end up with supporters circulating AI fantasy images of a politician as a warrior king, shirtless superhero, golden emperor, or messianic action figure who looks like fascism wandered into a protein powder commercial and immediately hired a stylist.

At some point, you stop looking at that and thinking “normal political enthusiasm” and start wondering whether mythology and marketing have quietly moved in together while democracy checks to see whether the exits are still unlocked.

Then there’s Washington, which is where the whole vanity thing stops feeling like personality trivia and starts feeling like governing philosophy.

Most presidents move into the White House understanding they’re caretakers. Temporary tenants. The building belongs to history, the office belongs to the country, and their job is to leave the place standing with slightly fewer problems than they found it. They redecorate a little, shift priorities, leave fingerprints around the edges, and eventually move on.

Trump often seems to approach institutions the way a casino owner approaches a lobby renovation after deciding subtlety is for poor people. Bigger. Shinier. Richer. More imposing. More flattering. More unmistakably mine. Gold accents. Ballroom fantasies. Monumental aesthetics. A constant instinct to turn public institutions into mirrors reflecting status, dominance, and spectacle rather than stewardship.

And look, wanting nice things isn’t the issue. Nobody’s arguing that presidents should decorate with folding chairs and fluorescent sadness. The problem is the psychology underneath it, because history is littered with powerful people who tried to stamp themselves onto reality. Kings put their faces on currency, strongmen rename buildings, autocrats hang giant portraits because power has always hated impermanence and fucking loves reminders.

Trump’s version somehow feels both grandiose and tacky at the same time, like Versailles got franchised by Atlantic City.

That instinct to personalize everything matters more than it sounds at first because vanity doesn’t stop at aesthetics. Vanity spreads. It leaks into expectations, relationships, decision-making, and eventually governance itself until institutions slowly stop asking what serves the country and start asking what serves the mood.

Once ego starts steering the ship, criticism stops arriving as information and starts arriving as insult. Correction feels humiliating. Expertise starts sounding disrespectful. Bad headlines become persecution. Public accountability starts looking suspiciously like betrayal, and the people surrounding power quietly learn a lesson every office worker has seen before: telling uncomfortable truths to an insecure boss becomes professionally dangerous as fuck.

Why obsess over crowd sizes for years? Why rage over photographs, television angles, applause levels, ratings, and every perceived slight like the world’s most powerful Yelp reviewer having a nervous breakdown? Why redraw a hurricane map instead of simply saying, “Yeah, got that one wrong”?

Because vanity fucking hates humiliation.

And when humiliation feels existential, reality itself starts becoming negotiable.

This is usually where people hear criticism of Trump’s vanity and accidentally shrink the argument into hair jokes, spray tan jokes, or lazy “haha narcissist” punchlines that miss the much creepier thing happening underneath.

The hair is funny. The mechanism is dangerous.

Most of us have worked for somebody like this, which is why the story feels weirdly familiar once you stop thinking about politics for a second and start thinking about office life. You know the boss. The insecure one everybody tiptoes around because honesty creates emotional weather. The manager who punishes bad news. The supervisor who wants praise more than truth and somehow turns every meeting into an obstacle course where everybody’s trying not to trigger a meltdown before lunch.

People adapt fast in those environments because they have to. You learn when to nod, when to smile, when to pretend terrible ideas are secretly genius, and when to quietly avoid becoming the messenger carrying reality into the room. Over time, solving problems matters less than managing moods, and everybody starts performing emotional maintenance instead of doing the job they were actually hired to do.

Now attach that dynamic to the presidency and suddenly the joke stops being funny.

A democracy can survive arrogance. Hell, America practically mass-produces arrogant politicians. What becomes dangerous is a government reorganizing itself around protecting one man from humiliation, because humiliation avoidance slowly warps incentives until flattery outranks competence, loyalty matters more than honesty, and facts start getting treated like rude little interruptions that just won’t shut the fuck up.

That’s the authoritarian creep people miss. Not movie-villain dictatorship. Not marching-boots fantasy. Something quieter, sadder, and honestly more pathetic: institutions slowly reorganized around personality instead of purpose, public service turning into image management, Washington drifting toward one giant emotional support system for power while everybody pretends this is somehow serious governance instead of political theater with taxpayer funding.

A democracy can survive arrogance. What it struggles to survive is government reorganized around protecting one man from humiliation.

That’s the real story.

Because once embarrassment becomes a national emergency, reality itself starts negotiating, and reality — inconveniently — never negotiates for free.

If Pacino’s devil really did have a favorite sin, maybe the scary part isn’t vanity itself. Everybody likes approval. Everybody likes applause. Everybody wants to feel admired, respected, attractive, or more important than they probably are. The problem starts when vanity grabs power and mistakes public office for a mirror, because at that point, you’re not governing anymore. You’re curating a reflection, and reflections don’t fix a goddamn fucking thing.

Donald Trump, what the fuck is wrong with you?

No, seriously.

At some point, this stops being politics and starts feeling painfully, absurdly human. After years of watching you pinball between grievance, revenge, public humiliation, loyalty tests, score-settling, theatrical outrage, and a frankly Olympic-level inability to let even microscopic criticism drift by without reacting like somebody insulted your bloodline, the question stops sounding partisan and starts sounding overdue.

Because here’s the thing, Donald: everybody has met some version of you. The relative who hijacks every holiday until everybody quietly changes behavior to avoid another goddamn eruption. The boss whose moods become office policy because nobody has the emotional bandwidth for another exhausting bullshit meeting built around one person’s ego. The guy who somehow starts the argument, escalates the argument, dominates the argument, and still leaves muttering about how unfairly he was treated while everybody else stands around wondering if they somehow hallucinated the last forty-five minutes.

Most people only deal with that personality at Thanksgiving. America handed it the nuclear codes.

And spare me the fake outrage about civility. This is not about whether I “like” you. Hell, politics is full of people I dislike. That’s practically the fucking business model. This is about accumulation. Years of behavior stacking on top of behavior until millions of people start staring at the television, wondering whether we’re all expected to normalize shit that would get almost anybody else quietly escorted out of a workplace, family business, church committee, golf club, or halfway respectable neighborhood barbecue.

Take criticism. Nobody enjoys hearing they screwed something up. Most adults still survive mild embarrassment without treating it like psychological warfare. You, on the other hand, react to criticism like medieval kingdoms reacted to invasion. A disagreement becomes betrayal. A fact becomes sabotage. Somebody says something mildly unflattering, and suddenly we’re knee-deep in grievance, insults, revenge fantasies, and enough rhetorical smoke to choke a horse. Former allies go from “fantastic” to useless idiots with astonishing speed, which means half the country now experiences conversational whiplash as a side effect of following your public life.

Then there’s your relationship with ownership, which, Jesus Christ, deserves its own chapter. Because, Donald, you talk about public institutions like somebody accidentally handed you the keys to the country and you mistook the whole damn thing for a luxury rewards program. The White House becomes your house. Federal agencies become your agencies right up until somebody says or does something inconvenient, and suddenly everybody is corrupt, weak, stupid, disloyal, unfair, nasty, crooked, or part of some conspiracy assembled from wounded pride and cable-news fumes.

Washington stops sounding like the capital of a constitutional republic and starts sounding like management failed to recognize the customer.

And somehow, even that level of chaos apparently wasn’t enough. You occasionally talk about allies and sovereign nations with an energy that makes diplomacy sound suspiciously like a real-estate negotiation conducted after three bourbons and an ego bruise. Alliances become invoices. Geography starts feeling negotiable. Entire countries get discussed with the energy of somebody hovering over a Monopoly board muttering, “Okay, but why can’t I just fucking take this one?”

And Donald, we need to have an uncomfortable little chat about your relationship with reality.

Not philosophy or ideology. I mean plain old, shoes-on-the-ground reality.

Because there are days when listening to you talk feels like accidentally walking into the middle of a conversation where somebody insists everything is fantastic while everybody else is paying bills, buying groceries, reading headlines, or looking directly at the world in front of them, wondering whether they somehow missed a memo. Every politician spins. Bullshit comes factory-installed in this business. Fine. But there’s a difference between polishing reality and narrating reality like the rest of us weren’t standing here with eyes, memories, and access to the same public events.

Sometimes it feels like you’re standing in front of the country saying, “No, no, no, the problem isn’t the thing you experienced. The problem is that you noticed it.”

And here’s the part that sticks in my craw: the strangest thing about you, Donald, may not actually be you. It may be everybody else. Because the bigger story stopped being one loud, grievance-fueled personality a long damn time ago. The bigger story became adaptation.

How the fuck did we get to a place where the U.S. military can carry out three lethal strikes in a single week, rack up more than 200 deaths in a months-long campaign, and most Americans never even hear about the first two?

According to the Associated Press, the latest strike killed three people aboard a suspected cartel-linked trafficking boat in the eastern Pacific — the third publicly announced strike in seven days, part of a broader campaign that’s reportedly claimed more than 200 lives since last fall.

That’s not me calling people stupid or lazy. Most people are drowning in the daily avalanche of bullshit. Groceries cost too damn much. Rent feels like financial waterboarding. Healthcare bills arrive looking like ransom notes from accountants with anger issues. Jobs expect three people’s labor for one paycheck while pretending pizza in the break room counts as morale. Life is loud as hell, and people naturally pay attention to whatever is actively punching them in the face.

That’s exactly why this story matters.

Sit with that for a second because, holy shit, that’s a lot of recurring military force happening mostly outside ordinary public attention.

Unless you spend your evenings doomscrolling military reporting or happen to reside here in Bastardonia, there’s a decent chance this is the first time you’re hearing about any of it. We’ve touched on pieces of this story before because the campaign didn’t magically appear yesterday. What we probably shouldn’t do is stop arguing while repeated military force quietly becomes background wallpaper.

Here’s the uncomfortable part: nobody even tried to hide this.

That matters because we’ve trained ourselves to think every undercovered story must involve a conspiracy. Somebody suppressed it. Somebody buried it. Some shadowy asshole in a smoke-filled room flipped the switch labeled Ignore Military Strikes.

Except that’s usually not how this shit works.

This story checks every box for modern invisibility. It’s offshore. It’s repetitive. It happens to people most Americans will never meet, in places most Americans couldn’t point to on a map, without materially disrupting ordinary life. No troop deployment footage dominates cable news. No casualty clock flashes across the screen every night. No immediate sacrifice touches most American households.

And people notice what interrupts life.

You notice groceries suddenly requiring a second mortgage.

You notice politicians threatening Social Security, healthcare, civil rights, or your paycheck.

You notice when your boss says, “Quick meeting,” and suddenly you’re trapped in forty-five minutes of corporate hostage negotiations about synergy or whatever fresh management cult bullshit got imported from LinkedIn this week.

Three military strikes against suspected trafficking boats thousands of miles offshore? For most exhausted people trying to survive, that becomes background noise unless somebody deliberately drags it back into view.

That’s not moral failure.

That’s bandwidth.

Still, here’s where my internal bullshit detector starts screaming.

Three strikes in one week should trigger debate. More than 200 deaths in a recurring military campaign should trigger debate. Repeated military force justified under expanding theories of cartel warfare should trigger debate — not because every action is illegitimate, but because democracies are supposed to argue about recurring force.

That’s the fucking job.

And this is where the story gets dangerous in a way that has nothing to do with whether any single strike was justified.

The danger is normalization.

Governments of every ideology love low-attention force. Hell, why wouldn’t they? Operations that happen offshore, without visible sacrifice, and without disrupting ordinary life, create fewer political headaches. Less scrutiny. Fewer hearings. Fewer angry constituents demanding somebody explain what the hell is happening. That doesn’t automatically make an action wrong, but it sure as hell means citizens ought to stay awake.

Because once repeated force becomes routine, scrutiny gets lazy as fuck. The first strike feels shocking. The fifth feels familiar. The twentieth starts feeling procedural.

Strike.

That’s the mechanism.

Not a conspiracy.

Not cartoon-villain evil.

Just institutions doing what institutions do while exhausted human beings adapt to repeated stimuli until extraordinary shit quietly starts feeling ordinary.

Did you ever have one of those moments where something sounds perfectly reasonable at first, then about thirty seconds later, your brain quietly taps you on the shoulder and says, “Hey… hold on a second. What the fuck did they just say?”

That’s the feeling this story leaves you with.

Because on the surface, recent reporting from WIRED sounds responsible enough. Federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies are reportedly paying closer attention to threats against AI infrastructure and growing hostility toward technology under the language being discussed as “anti-tech extremism.” And before somebody sprints into the comments section like they just got shot out of a cannon, let’s establish the obvious: if somebody starts threatening workers, sabotaging facilities, or trying to blow shit up because a chatbot bruised their ego, yes, the government should care. Nobody serious is arguing otherwise.

But sit with this story for another minute, pour yourself something decent, and a more uncomfortable question starts crawling across the table. When does concern about violence quietly turn into suspicion toward dissent? Because history says government has a habit of starting with something understandable and then stretching the hell out of it until ordinary people are left blinking and wondering how we ended up here.

Government loves a category. Holy shit, does government love a category. More importantly, government loves categories that sound boring enough nobody notices when they start quietly expanding. “Security concerns.” “Temporary emergency authority.” “Enhanced screening.” Everything sounds perfectly sensible right up until you wake up one day and realize you’ve spent twenty years taking your shoes off at airports because somebody somewhere decided toothpaste might secretly be a criminal mastermind.

That’s the thing about bureaucracy. It almost never says, “Good news, folks, we solved the problem.” It says, “Interesting… what else fits inside this box?” And because the language sounds dull enough to induce a nap, people stop paying attention until some wildly expanded version of the original idea shows up in everyday life, asking why the fuck everyone suddenly seems nervous.

Now here’s the part of this story that makes it bigger than partisan sludge and a hell of a lot more personal.

People protesting AI data centers are not some fringe anti-computer cult sitting in candlelit basements whispering about robot doom. They’re homeowners wondering what happens to property values. Parents are asking what happens when already-strained infrastructure is pushed harder. Farmers, environmental groups, local officials, fiscal conservatives, and ordinary exhausted people who woke up one morning to discover a giant industrial facility is moving into town while politicians keep repeating the word “innovation” like it’s holy scripture.

Because these places are huge. Not metaphorically huge. Physically huge. They burn absurd amounts of electricity, consume massive quantities of water for cooling systems, and can dramatically alter local infrastructure in ways residents often don’t fully understand until construction starts and somebody finally says, “Wait, what exactly did we agree to here?”

That water issue matters because residents aren’t just worried about supply. In some communities, concerns have surfaced around water quality, wastewater systems, discharge practices, chemically treated cooling systems, or whether infrastructure gets stressed badly enough that contamination risks increase. To keep this honest, nobody’s saying every AI facility turns into a comic-book villain poisoning the town reservoir. But if a giant industrial operation shows up demanding millions of gallons of water while potentially straining systems that already feel fragile, people have every damn right to ask questions.

The questions start sounding pretty reasonable, too. Why are billion-dollar companies getting tax breaks? What happens to electricity costs, water systems, noise levels, property values, or the basic character of a town? And why do tech billionaires keep casually talking about replacing jobs while asking everyone to trust them with the future?

That coalition of concern matters because it cuts across ideology in a way politicians hate. Conservatives don’t love sweetheart deals or subsidies. Environmental groups hate unnecessary strain on land and water. Families hate disruption. Homeowners hate feeling steamrolled. Local officials hate discovering billion-dollar decisions somehow got made around them instead of with them.

Which means what happens next looks suspiciously like democracy, messy and loud and deeply annoying to anybody hoping people quietly sit down and shut up.

It looks like exhausted residents showing up after work to zoning meetings in fluorescent-lit rooms, drinking terrible coffee, getting increasingly pissed off while somebody at the front says, “We appreciate your concerns,” with the emotional warmth of a Comcast customer-service script. It looks like petitions, neighborhood organizing, awkward public comments, frustrated questions, and arguments over whether anybody in power bothered listening before signing off on a project half the town barely understood.

That isn’t dysfunction.

That’s citizenship.

And this is where the bourbon starts tasting funny.

According to WIRED’s reporting, intelligence and law-enforcement materials increasingly frame hostility toward AI and technology through language tied to “anti-tech extremism.” Again, governments absolutely have legitimate reasons to care about violence or sabotage. Nobody wants facilities attacked or workers threatened.

But here’s the problem institutions keep tripping over: they are historically terrible at separating danger from inconvenience, especially when the inconvenience is aimed at something powerful people desperately want protected.

Labor organizers became radicals.

Civil-rights activists got surveilled.

Environmental protesters turned into “security concerns.”

Pipeline opponents got treated like they were auditioning for a Bond villain franchise instead of screaming about land and water.

Funny how often the same pattern shows up once money and power decide something matters.

Once money and power decide something matters, criticism starts sounding suspiciously impolite. AI isn’t being sold as just another industry. It’s being sold as destiny, national competitiveness, economic survival, America’s future. And once something gets wrapped in language like the future, disagreement suddenly sounds rude.

Question military spending, and somebody says you’re weak.

Question Wall Street, and apparently, you hate capitalism.

Question giant, water-hungry AI facilities showing up in your backyard and, well, fuck, now people start floating language that makes ordinary concern sound suspicious.

You’ve seen this dynamic before because it isn’t really political. It’s human.

The employee raising concerns suddenly becomes “negative.” The person asking uncomfortable questions somehow turns into “difficult.” Families do it. Workplaces do it. Friend groups do it. Somebody refuses to smile through obvious bullshit, and suddenly they become the problem, not because they’re wrong but because they’re inconvenient.

Power rarely defeats criticism by arguing with it.

Power defeats criticism by redefining the critic.

And before anybody accuses me of wandering into paranoia, let’s keep the facts where they belong. WIRED is not reporting that every angry resident suddenly gets a surveillance corkboard covered in red string and screenshots of Facebook rants.

That’s not the story.

The story is subtler than that, which honestly makes it creepier.

And this is the part people always underestimate until it’s already happened. Nobody wakes up one morning and says, “You know what sounds great? Treating local dissent like a security issue.” It creeps. A category exists. Then it grows. Categories become priorities, priorities become budgets, budgets become task forces, and task forces become habits until one day ordinary people start realizing they’ve been quietly reclassified without anybody ever announcing the fucking change.

Imagine your town announces one of these facilities tomorrow. Maybe you’re worried about water, noise, power demand, taxes, or whether your neighborhood suddenly turns into an industrial humming machine nobody voted for. Maybe you just think billion-dollar corporations shouldn’t get sweetheart deals while everyone else gets told to tighten their belts and smile.

So you show up.

You miss dinner to attend zoning meetings. You sign petitions. You organize neighbors. You ask uncomfortable questions because somebody has to.

That isn’t extremism.

That’s citizenship.

And underneath all of this sits the real question:

What happens when institutions start treating opposition to powerful interests as behavior adjacent to danger?

Because once saying “no” starts feeling risky, power barely has to force compliance anymore. It just waits for exhaustion to do the work, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than arguing with citizens too fucking tired to keep fighting.

Reuters reports that the Trump administration has explored using federal control over customs and immigration infrastructure as leverage against cities and states that refuse to align with White House priorities, specifically by restricting processing at airports serving sanctuary jurisdictions.

That’s the fact. Sit with it for a second before the screaming starts.

There’s a particular kind of asshole everybody knows. Maybe it was a boss. Maybe an ex. Maybe that petty little tyrant in middle management who suddenly decided your vacation request had become a national security concern the second you disagreed with him in a meeting. Those people almost never come at you head-on. Direct conflict creates accountability, and accountability is bad for manipulative people. No, the real professionals in petty control understand something uglier: power works better when it feels like an inconvenience.

They don’t fire you. They “restructure.” Paperwork disappears. Schedules mysteriously change. Help suddenly becomes impossible to find. Life gets just annoying enough that pushing back starts feeling more exhausting than surrender. After a while, exhaustion does the work fear couldn’t.

Which brings us to one deeply unsettling question: what in the fuck is the federal government doing even flirting with this idea?

Buried inside that Reuters reporting is a story that’s a hell of a lot bigger than immigration. On paper, it sounds boring as hell: bureaucratic, technical, the sort of thing cable news panels mumble through while viewers check their phones. In practice, it means international airports in places like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or San Francisco potentially becoming pressure points in a political fight, with ordinary people bearing the consequences.

And if your first reaction is, “Well, airports are federal,” congratulations - you’ve stumbled into the scary part. That’s exactly fucking why this matters. Because the story isn’t immigration. The story is leverage.

Once the government starts treating systems people depend on as punishment tools, politics quietly stops being persuasion and starts becoming coercion wearing a suit and pretending to be paperwork.

Think about airports for a second. Airports are already humanity at its emotional breaking point - everybody’s underslept, mildly furious, overcharged, dehydrated, and pretending not to snap while paying fourteen dollars for yogurt, somehow worse than school cafeteria food. That’s the mechanism. The ugly little theory underneath it all becomes brutally simple: Do what we want or your people suffer.

That should scare the shit out of everybody, regardless of where you land politically.

What makes this especially dangerous is how boring it sounds. Democratic erosion seldom kicks the front door down, screaming like some Netflix villain monologue. Nobody walks into the briefing room and announces, “Good afternoon, America. We’re experimenting with soft authoritarianism this quarter.”

Instead, it creeps in disguised as procedure. Policy. Administrative review. Selective enforcement. Friction. A delay here. A slowdown there. A process suddenly becoming impossible to navigate for the people whom somebody in power wants to pressure.

Everybody reading this already knows the feeling, because most of us have lived some smaller version of it. You know that boss who suddenly becomes “too busy” to approve something after you disagree with him? The manipulative person who weaponizes logistics because outright confrontation would expose what they’re doing? They don’t scream. They don’t threaten. They just make normal life harder until you’re too exhausted to keep fighting. That helpless feeling - that moment where you think, Jesus Christ, maybe it’s easier to stop arguing and move on with my day - now scale that psychology up to federal power. That’s where this story goes from “airport annoyance” to “holy shit, this could get dark.”

Because here’s the part people miss: governments don’t always discover control through force. Sometimes they discover it through friction. History is full of examples where power learned something uncomfortable and deeply effective - people don’t need to be crushed if they can simply be worn down.

Paperwork. Permits. Investigations. Delays. Selective enforcement. Endless bureaucratic bullshit delivered with a smile and a shrug. You don’t need tanks in the street if people start learning that resistance mysteriously comes with administrative headaches. You don’t need dramatic crackdowns if entire communities begin associating dissent with inconvenience.

That’s what makes this feel so damn unsettling.

And then there’s the hypocrisy, because holy hell is there hypocrisy. The same movement that spent decades screaming about government overreach, bureaucratic abuse, federal tyranny, and unelected officials suddenly seems pretty comfortable with federal systems becoming punishment devices, so long as the punishment lands on cities they dislike. Apparently, “small government” now means government small enough to crawl directly into your enemies’ daily lives and make them miserable. Funny how principles get really flexible when your team holds the keys.

A principle survives when your opponents benefit.

A fandom survives only when your guy wins.

That distinction matters because once leaders figure out inconvenience works, the temptation spreads fast. Today it’s airports. Tomorrow, maybe it’s permitting delays, visa slowdowns, disaster aid bottlenecks, regulatory friction, or postal disruptions. None of this requires dramatic speeches or martial law.

That’s what makes it dangerous as fuck. And before somebody yells, “Relax, this is hypothetical,” sure. Fair. Nobody’s claiming we’re five minutes away from The Hunger Games: TSA Edition. But democracies aren’t supposed to wait until smoke pours out of the building before asking why somebody smells gasoline.

The danger isn’t only the action. It’s the instinct, the willingness, the underlying logic sitting quietly underneath the idea: How hard can we make life until people comply?

Because once the government starts thinking that way, the relationship changes. Citizens stop being people to serve and start becoming pressure points to manage.

That’s the bigger story here, and the media misses it all the damn time because politics gets treated like sports commentary for exhausted adults. Who won the day? Who scored points? Who had the better cable segment? Meanwhile, the mechanism sits there in plain sight screaming, Hey assholes, somebody’s testing whether inconvenience can become governance.

And maybe the creepiest sentence in this whole article is also the simplest: authoritarianism doesn’t always arrive wearing boots. Sometimes it arrives holding a clipboard and telling you your flight has been delayed indefinitely.

That line lands because deep down, everybody understands this feeling. Democracies don’t usually collapse in explosions. They decay the same way toxic workplaces, broken relationships, and shitty institutions decay - slowly, quietly, one exhausted compromise at a time.

The most chilling part of all this is how familiar the psychology feels. Strip away the politics, and this is playground behavior with federal authority attached. Do what I want, or everybody suffers. That isn’t leadership. That’s hostage logic. And once a government learns hostage logic works, every disagreement starts looking like leverage waiting to happen.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth sitting at the center of this whole mess: a government that learns to inconvenience people into obedience rarely stops at inconvenience.

It just learns what else works.

Seriously. Sit with that for a second because if somebody had told you ten years ago that an American president would celebrate turning eighty by staging a goddamn pay per view spectacle on the South Lawn with dramatic lighting, celebrity fighters, Dana White hovering nearby, and enough testosterone in the air to qualify as a weather system, you probably would’ve laughed, ordered another drink, and asked what the hell they were smoking.

Yet here we are.

And before the usual crowd starts warming up their keyboards, yes, there’s context. The official justification is America 250. TKO is reportedly paying most of the production costs. There are public viewing areas. Nobody’s accusing Trump of personally renting folding chairs and charging taxpayers for hot dogs like this is the world’s angriest Little League fundraiser.

Now that we’ve gotten the paperwork out of the way, can we talk about what the fuck this actually feels like?

Because if this were one weird thing, fine. Presidents do weird shit. America has always had a little circus mixed into politics. But after a while, you stop looking at each bizarre episode as an isolated event and start asking yourself an uncomfortable question: why does everything around Trump slowly start feeling more Trump?

That’s the thing nagging at me here. The UFC event lands weirdly not because presidents can’t host events or celebrate milestones, but because it feels like the latest installment in a long-running story where public institutions increasingly bend toward one man’s personality, taste, spectacle, relationships, and mythology.

Jesus Christ, the pattern is hard to ignore once you stop pretending each piece exists in a vacuum.

Take the parade last year. Officially, it celebrated the Army’s two hundred fiftieth anniversary. Fair enough. Context matters. Nobody’s saying presidents shouldn’t attend patriotic events or stand near tanks while pretending they suddenly care about military precision. Still, you cannot tell me the optics of a giant military parade unfolding on Trump’s birthday did not carry at least a little “look at this enormous thing happening around Donald Trump” energy.

That matters because symbolism matters. The White House matters because symbolism matters. Public ritual matters because symbolism matters. The presidency is supposed to feel bigger than the person holding it. That’s the entire fucking point.

You borrow the office.

You don’t move in like some rich asshole wandering around muttering, “Nice place. Needs more me.”

And this is where somebody inevitably jumps into the comments screaming, “OH SO PRESIDENTS CAN’T CHANGE ANYTHING NOW?”

Calm down, Brad.

Nobody said that shit.

Presidents renovate. Presidents redecorate. Presidents leave fingerprints. Obama changed things. Bush changed things. Biden changed things. Hell, presidents have been rearranging furniture since America still thought powdered wigs looked sexy.

What feels different here is scale, repetition, and instinct.

The Rose Garden fight wasn’t really about landscaping. Most Americans couldn’t identify a damn shrub if their mortgage depended on it. What people reacted to was the feeling that even symbolic space increasingly started reflecting Trump’s tastes, preferences, and aesthetics. Then came the ballroom ambitions, because apparently living in the White House wasn’t enough unless it also carried luxury event venue energy.

You can defend every single one of those things individually. That’s what makes this tricky.

One redesign? Fine.

One spectacle? Fine.

One over the top event? Fine.

But eventually all the little “fine” moments pile up into a giant pile of “okay, seriously, what the fuck are we doing?”

Because now we’ve got the South Lawn becoming UFC central on Trump’s actual birthday, complete with a close ally in Dana White orbiting the production while the White House itself becomes a backdrop for a made-for-television spectacle.

Tell me that doesn’t feel weird as shit.

And before somebody says I’m overthinking this, okay, maybe. But after the fifth, sixth, and seventh examples, eventually skepticism starts sounding more rational than denial.

The reflecting pool redesign conversation lands differently inside this pattern. The triumphal arch proposal lands differently inside this pattern. Even the broader obsession with monumentality, grandeur, visual permanence, and giant symbolic gestures starts carrying a very particular emotional frequency. Trump frames many of these ideas as patriotic, beautiful, restorative, and American.

Fine.

Maybe sometimes they are.

But citizens are still allowed to ask a basic goddamn question without being treated like lunatics:

Why does temporary power keep looking so interested in leaving giant reminders of itself?

That question matters because democratic institutions are supposed to humble people. The White House is supposed to remind presidents that they are temporary tenants of something older and larger than themselves. You are supposed to feel smaller walking into it. A little awed. A little intimidated. Maybe even a little scared of screwing up.

Trump often projects the opposite energy.

The office bends toward him.

The spectacle bends toward him.

The symbolism bends toward him.

And over time, the institution itself starts feeling less like borrowed space and more like branding.

Everybody knows this guy.

You’ve worked for him.

The boss who slowly starts treating company resources like personal property because nobody pushes back. First, it’s harmless. A conference room becomes “his conference room.” Then a parking space becomes “his parking space.” Then suddenly everybody realizes the shared thing somehow stopped feeling shared, and nobody can even pinpoint when the hell it happened because entitlement rarely barges through the front door screaming.

It settles in.

It normalizes itself.

It quietly grabs the remote and starts acting like it owns the damn couch.

Maybe you think I’m full of shit.

Fair enough.

Maybe you think a White House UFC event sounds fun as hell, and all this hand-wringing is overblown. Also fair.

But democracies get weird as fuck when public institutions stop feeling public and start feeling personalized. They get weird when symbolism increasingly flatters the leader instead of constraining him. At some point in the last twenty years, customer service quietly stopped being a service and became a psychological endurance sport.

You know the feeling. Something simple goes wrong. A mystery charge appears on your bank statement. A package vanishes into the logistical Bermuda Triangle. Your internet suddenly slows to speeds normally associated with smoke signals. You call because you assume this is still a society where human beings occasionally solve problems for one another.

Instead, you’re greeted by a robot voice that sounds suspiciously cheerful for someone about to ruin your afternoon.

“Please listen carefully, as our menu options have changed.”

No, they fucking haven’t.

Nobody believes that. Not you, not me, not the exhausted employee trapped in a cubicle somewhere, silently questioning their life choices. Yet every corporation in America insists on beginning the interaction with what feels like a tiny piece of psychological warfare, as if confusion itself has become a customer-retention strategy.

Then the maze begins.

Press 1 for billing. Press 2 for support. Say in a few words why you’re calling. “Representative.” “I think you said account security.” No, motherfucker, I said representative.

You repeat yourself. The robot misunderstands you with the confidence of a guy explaining baseball at a bar while being catastrophically wrong. Eventually, after enough repetition to qualify as emotional cardio, you reach an actual human being who apologizes politely before informing you that they are, unfortunately, the wrong department.

Now you’re in transfer hell.

Hold music starts playing — always some weird corporate smooth jazz that somehow sounds both soothing and threatening — while your estimated wait time becomes vague enough to qualify as philosophy. Somewhere around minute forty-three, you begin wondering whether the refund is worth more than your remaining sanity.

Here’s where most people get the story wrong, though. This isn’t incompetence.

Incompetence would actually be reassuring because incompetence implies failure. It suggests somebody screwed up, someone in management missed the problem, and if enough people complained loudly enough, maybe an executive somewhere would eventually pound a conference table and declare, “Dammit, fix customer service.”

That isn’t what happened.

Customer service didn’t collapse. It was redesigned.

Corporations figured out something darkly elegant a long time ago: saying “no” creates friction. A denied request makes customers angry. Angry customers complain, leave bad reviews, contact regulators, threaten lawsuits, or become internet vigilantes documenting every miserable interaction for strangers online.

Exhaustion, however, is quieter.

Exhaustion scales.

Exhaustion works.

If a cancellation process becomes confusing enough, a percentage of people simply stop trying. If refund systems require six steps, three passwords, and a blood oath, enough customers will eventually decide the fifty dollars isn’t worth sacrificing an afternoon and part of their emotional stability. Understaff a call center badly enough, and suddenly the spreadsheet starts reporting an incredible improvement in “resolved complaints,” mostly because exhausted people stop filing them.

That’s the trick.

Modern corporations realized they don’t have to defeat you. They just have to outlast you.

Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Airlines somehow maintain apps sophisticated enough to sell you upgrades in four seconds flat while becoming mysteriously helpless the moment compensation enters the conversation. Banks flag your card because you dared buy gas in another ZIP code, but somehow miss a criminal trying to buy jet skis in another country. Internet companies make cancellation feel like escaping a manipulative relationship where every sentence starts with, “Before you go…”

Healthcare, somehow, found a way to make all of this worse.

Nothing says “we care about your well-being” quite like a patient portal that looks like it survived three software extinctions and now requires seventeen passwords, two verification codes, and a scavenger hunt just to ask why you were billed eight hundred dollars for somebody touching your elbow.

And here’s the thing everybody recognizes in their bones: by the end of these interactions, you somehow feel guilty.

You spend three hours fixing a mistake that wasn’t yours, repeating your account number like a hostage delivering proof of life, and when an exhausted worker finally apologizes for the inconvenience, you catch yourself saying, “No worries, I know it’s not your fault.”

Meanwhile, your day is gone. And somehow you’re apologizing.

That emotional fatigue isn’t collateral damage. It’s profitable.

A corporation doesn’t need perfect customer service if enough people give up. If making ten thousand customers miserable saves three million dollars in labor, support staffing, or refunds, misery becomes a business strategy disguised as operational efficiency.

“Modern institutions learned they don’t have to say ‘no.’ They just have to make ‘yes’ so exhausting that you surrender.”

What makes this story bigger than annoying hold music and chatbot rage is the way the logic has spread everywhere else.

Insurance companies operate bureaucratic obstacle courses where the denial is rarely direct, just delayed until exhaustion becomes compliance. Government websites often feel designed by somebody who actively resents human happiness. Endless verification systems, forms for forms, passwords to recover passwords, customer support loops that quietly teach you the same lesson over and over again:

Power no longer slams the door in your face.

It just makes standing outside so exhausting that eventually you stop knocking.

And that changes people — in ways that go deeper than a bad afternoon.

When enough systems train you to expect frustration, people stop contesting charges, stop filing complaints, stop asking questions, and eventually stop believing institutions can work at all. Dysfunction becomes normal because fighting dysfunction becomes emotionally expensive.

That’s the danger hiding underneath what sounds like a funny rant about hold music.

The real damage isn’t inconvenience.

The real damage is learned helplessness.

The joke, of course, is that this wasn’t supposed to be the future.

We were promised robot servants, convenience, and magical technology that would save time. Instead, we got chatbots politely telling us to go fuck ourselves while soft jazz plays in the background and an app asks us to restart the app that stopped working.

That isn’t innovation.

That’s shareholder value with better branding.

And the next time you find yourself yelling “representative” into the void while reconsidering every life decision that brought you to that moment, remember something important:

You are not failing the system.

The system is succeeding exactly as designed.

Europe’s sexually transmitted infection numbers are blowing the hell up, and before anybody starts doing that loud American thing where we puff out our chest and explain why this could never happen here because freedom or Jesus or pickup trucks or whatever the fuck, maybe sit down for a minute.

Because this story gets uncomfortable fast.

At first glance, it sounds like one of those weird Europe stories Americans love to treat like entertainment. Gonorrhea is way up. Syphilis is way up. Congenital syphilis, the nightmare version where babies get infected during pregnancy, nearly doubled in a year, according to European public health officials. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control says gonorrhea cases topped 100,000 in 2024, syphilis cases more than doubled compared with a decade ago, and congenital infections are climbing too.

And you can already hear the bullshit starting.

“Society’s collapsing.” “Dating apps ruined civilization.” “Nobody has morals anymore.”

Same crowd. Same sermon. Same people who think every complicated problem on Earth can be solved by yelling louder from a recliner while somebody else reheats the mozzarella sticks.

Except hold the fuck on.

Because while America is busy pointing across the Atlantic like we’re somehow protected by patriotic antibodies, the CDC says congenital syphilis in the United States has climbed for twelve straight years and reached nearly 4,000 reported cases in 2024. That means thousands of babies in the richest country on Earth were born with a preventable infection we already know how to test for and treat. The country that never shuts up about being exceptional somehow keeps fumbling actual families through healthcare cracks big enough to swallow people whole.

And this is the part where your internal bullshit detector ought to wake up.

Because medicine already knows how to deal with this. Pregnant women are supposed to be screened. Infections caught early can often be treated. Congenital transmission is preventable in most cases according to the CDC, which means the second these numbers start climbing year after year, this stops being some morality play about who slept with whom and becomes a much nastier question about whether the damn system is quietly eating shit while everyone argues about culture war nonsense.

That’s where this story starts getting weird. At first it looks like a sex story. Then it becomes a healthcare story. Then, if you sit with it for a second, it becomes a story about systems quietly failing in ways ordinary people don’t notice until life punches them in the mouth.

And buddy, that’s where your drink ought to start tasting different.

Here’s the ugly little secret about public health: when it works, nobody notices. Nobody throws a parade because a county clinic caught an infection early. Nobody pops champagne because a nurse made sure somebody came back for follow-up care. Nobody runs for office promising, “Vote for me and I’ll make preventive medicine slightly more efficient.”

Prevention is boring. Prevention is paperwork. Prevention is follow-up calls, screenings, funding, staffing, transportation, trust, and a thousand tiny invisible things quietly working in the background so disaster never gets its own headline.

It’s plumbing.

And Americans, Jesus Christ, we are terrible at respecting plumbing. We ignore the weird smell in the basement. We kick the leaking pipe down the road. We complain when maintenance costs money. Then one day, the ceiling caves in, and suddenly everybody wants to know who could’ve possibly seen this coming.

Buddy, the warning lights were blinking so hard they damn near qualified as a nightclub.

Because this stuff does not happen all at once. Public health failure is sneaky. It shows up wearing sweatpants and bad timing. Maybe the clinic in town closed, and now the nearest appointment is forty-five minutes away. Maybe somebody’s working two jobs and keeps meaning to schedule care, but life keeps body checking them into next week. Maybe insurance decides that the thing that should take one phone call requires seventeen phone calls and a blood sacrifice to somebody named Todd in billing. Maybe somebody’s embarrassed, broke, exhausted, overwhelmed, or scared.

And before somebody jumps in yelling about “personal responsibility,” relax, Professor Facebook. Of course, personal responsibility matters. Nobody’s arguing otherwise. But let me ask a real question. How the hell are people supposed to make responsible healthcare choices inside systems that keep making healthcare harder to get?

Responsible choices work a lot better when clinics exist, when appointments are available, when people trust doctors, when health departments are staffed, and when preventive care does not feel like navigating a bureaucratic escape room while life is already kicking your ass.

That should not be controversial, but apparently, in America, even saying, “Hey, maybe pregnant women should be able to get screened for preventable infections,” somehow turns into an ideological knife fight by lunchtime.

Now here’s where this stops being uncomfortable and starts getting a little scary.

Because Europe’s STI surge is the headline, but America is the mirror. And if the mirror already looks cracked, maybe this is not the ideal moment to start screwing around with the systems meant to catch problems early.

I am not saying Donald Trump woke up one morning and invented syphilis. Calm down. Finish the drink. Nobody said that. I’m saying something much simpler: if warning lights are already blinking, weakening public health systems is probably a dumbass idea. That is not ideology. That is cause and effect.

Under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., federal health agencies have gone through major upheaval, staffing disruption, and endless political trench warfare over expertise, science, vaccines, trust, and public health priorities. Reuters and other reporting have documented agency restructuring, staff cuts, and scientists warning about weakened capacity and public trust. You can agree or disagree with pieces of that agenda all day long, but pretending instability carries zero risk is like pretending tequila never ruins anybody’s Wednesday.

And this is where people get twitchy because nobody likes hearing the boring answer: public health is infrastructure. Not vibes, not partisan branding, not whatever conspiracy TED Talk your weird cousin reposted at 2:13 in the morning. It’s roads, bridges, water systems, disease surveillance, clinics, screenings, staffing, follow-up care, all the boring invisible shit everybody takes for granted right up until it fails spectacularly.

You know what this reminds me of? The guy who ignores the grinding noise in his transmission for eight months because fixing it sounds expensive, then stares into the smoke on the side of the highway like the universe personally betrayed him.

That guy is America.

We keep treating prevention like optional maintenance, then act shocked when the engine dies on the highway.

Reality shows up with receipts, and everybody suddenly acts confused.

“How could this happen?”

Well, maybe because we treated expertise like elitism, prevention like waste, and science like political theater while thousands of preventable problems quietly piled up in the background.

And here’s the part that should piss people off in a very human way. Congenital syphilis is not abstract. It means something failed somewhere. A screening was missed, care delayed, treatment interrupted, and trust broken. Life got loud, and tomorrow kept getting postponed until tomorrow turned into trouble.

Picture your niece trying to juggle prenatal appointments around a boss who acts like pregnancy is a scheduling inconvenience. Picture your daughter crying in a parking lot because insurance denied something again and she’s too exhausted to spend forty minutes fighting with a robot voice on hold. Picture some overwhelmed county clinic trying to keep things moving while staff shortages turn every day into triage. Which is why the moralizing around stories like this drives me insane. The easy version is comforting. “Kids these days.” “Hookup culture.” “Bad choices.” Everybody gets to feel morally superior for twenty minutes while babies are still getting infected with something we already know how to catch and treat, and at some point, maybe the question stops being who to shame and starts being: what the fuck are we doing?

it amazes me how this country loves pretending every problem is about individual virtue right up until collective failure shows up with a hospital wristband.

And here’s the thing, Europe’s numbers ought to tell us: warnings do not show up with dramatic movie music. They show up in trendlines, staffing shortages, quietly worsening outcomes, and systems wobbling while everybody’s attention gets dragged toward louder, shinier nonsense. By the time consequences become obvious, the bill has already arrived.

That’s why this story matters. Not because Europe is doomed. Not because America is doomed. Because prevention only feels invisible when it works. When it stops working, suddenly everybody notices, usually right around the time they start asking why nobody saw this coming.

The warning lights were blinking the whole damn time. The question is why the hell we keep ignoring them until something preventable turns tragic.

Republicans spent years warning us that government corruption would destroy America.

You remember the speeches. The scary music. The finger-pointing. Shadowy elites rigging the system. Political insiders helping themselves while ordinary people are getting screwed. We heard so much about weaponized government, you’d think Washington was secretly run out of a volcano by Bond villains in expensive loafers.

Then, in one of those plot twists that would feel too ridiculous if HBO pitched it in a writers’ room, some Republicans finally found a red line.

Apparently, it was a taxpayer-connected grievance fund tied to Trump allies, a luxury ballroom, and a settlement strange enough to make even seasoned cynics stop mid-sip and mutter, “Okay, what the fuck is this?”

Here’s the part that should make people sit up a little straighter: stories like this almost never arrive looking dangerous. They arrive disguised as paperwork.

Complicated language. Legal jargon. Administrative process. The kind of story exhausted people scroll past at night while reheating leftovers, worrying about bills, checking bank balances, or wondering whether one surprise expense is about to kick the shit out of the monthly budget.

And honestly, who could blame them? Most people are just trying to survive.

That’s exactly why this stuff matters.

And maybe right now you’re thinking:

Tom, politicians are corrupt. Water’s wet. What else is new?

Fair.

But here’s where this story quietly starts tightening around your ankles.

Corruption usually hides. It whispers. It sneaks around parking garages and back rooms, pretending nobody can hear it breathing. What we’re watching here feels different, like corruption finally got comfortable enough to stop sneaking around and start introducing itself in broad daylight.

And this is the part where I want you to think about something personal for a second, because most people already know what unfairness feels like.

Maybe you’ve worked with somebody who never followed the rules but somehow always landed on their feet because they were buddies with the boss. The coworker who missed deadlines, dumped work on everybody else, took credit for things they didn’t do, and still got protected while decent people walked around terrified of screwing up once.

Or maybe it wasn’t work.

Maybe it was healthcare. Insurance. School. Taxes. Family. One of those moments where you played by the rules because you thought the rules mattered, only to realize somebody else had quietly been playing a completely different game the whole damn time.

That feeling sticks with people.

Not just anger, but exhaustion, as well.

The kind that settles in your chest when you start wondering if fairness only exists for people without money, power, or connections. The quiet voice asking whether doing the right thing still matters if the assholes always seem to win.

And this, right here, is where the story starts feeling less like politics and more like something that eventually lands in your own damn life.

Because democracies run on trust way more than people realize.

Not blind trust. Nobody trusts politicians that much.

Functional trust.

The belief that if you work hard, follow the rules, pay taxes, show up, and try to do the right thing, the system at least pretends to apply standards evenly. Once people stop believing that, things begin breaking in ways you don’t notice immediately.

And once enough people stop believing fairness exists, things start breaking.

People disengage.

People stop believing institutions belong to them.

Or, and this is where history gets dark as hell, they start looking for somebody who promises to rig the system back in their favor.

Democracies don’t usually collapse like action movies. They don’t arrive with orchestral music and villains announcing themselves. They crack quietly, the way a house settles before somebody finally notices the line running across the ceiling and mutters, “Uh… should we be worried about that?”

This is also where the media drives me completely up a fucking wall.

Watch what happens to stories like this. Every sharp edge gets filed down into bureaucratic oatmeal: a “settlement,” an “administrative resolution,” a “controversy,” a “framework.”

Calling something potentially this alarming an “administrative agreement” is like calling a casino robbery an unexpected cash redistribution event. The language itself trains people not to feel urgency.

And before somebody screams “Trump Derangement Syndrome” into a Facebook comment section while angrily pecking at their phone, calm down and finish your drink.

This isn’t about whether you like Trump.

It’s about precedent.

Because if Democrats built a $1.776 billion grievance fund tied to Biden allies while shielding his family from scrutiny, conservatives would be screaming so hard meteorologists would classify it as weather.

You know that.

I know that.

Fox News would be broadcasting from inside an active volcano.

That sentence matters because what scares me isn’t merely corruption. America’s had corrupt bastards since powdered wigs.

What scares me is normalization — the slow, dangerous feeling that there are now two systems: one for insiders and one for everybody else.

And if you think that eventually doesn’t land on regular people or someone you love, I honestly don’t know what to tell you.

Because it always lands somewhere.

In your taxes.

Your healthcare.

Your retirement.

Your job.

Your kid’s future.

Your family’s ability to believe fairness still matters.

A democracy doesn’t collapse the second corruption appears. It starts collapsing when corruption feels normal enough to stop shocking us.

That’s the real story here.

Not merely Trump.

Not merely the ballroom.

Not merely one bizarre grievance fund.

The growing feeling that rules still exist: they just don’t seem to exist for the same people anymore.

And once a country starts believing that?

History says the next chapter usually gets pretty damn ugly.

For years, Trump’s biggest political superpower hasn’t actually been ideology, charisma, patriotism, or whatever fresh pile of bullshit cable news insists explains everything this week. His real superpower has been something uglier and a hell of a lot simpler: convincing people that fighting him costs more than surrendering to him.

That’s the whole fucking trick.

Congress folds because crossing Trump might mean a primary headache and six months of being called a traitor by @FreedomBonerPatriot, a guy whose profile picture somehow contains an eagle, three flags, Oakleys, and unresolved feelings. At the same time, his entire online personality consists of protein powder, flag emojis, and yelling READ THE CONSTITUTION in all caps under weather reports. CEOs suddenly rediscover the joys of strategic silence. Universities call lawyers before subpoenas even land. Foreign governments smile politely through meetings while privately thinking, Jesus Christ, let’s survive this asshole and get to dessert.

And here’s the thing people miss when politics turns into reality TV for people with blood pressure problems: intimidation doesn’t work because everybody loves you. Hell, it doesn’t even work because everybody agrees with you. It works because enough people quietly decide, You know what? I’m not picking that fight today.

That tiny calculation is where the power lives.

For years, saying “fine” felt cheaper than saying “fuck that,” and that little bit of math shaped damn near everything around Trump. Somebody pushed back, everybody braced for impact, pundits started sweating through television makeup, and Washington behaved like suburban dads who know there’s a raccoon in the attic but absolutely do not want to be the first dumbass sticking a hand into the darkness.

Better to ignore the scratching and pretend the ceiling isn’t moving.

This isn’t a story about Trump suddenly becoming weak. It sure as hell isn’t a story about Republicans discovering morality in a desk drawer somewhere between expired courage and donor spreadsheets. Democracy didn’t wake up Tuesday morning and decide to stop cosplaying as a hostage situation.

What’s happening is stranger than that and, honestly, more dangerous.

Because something weird has started creeping into the math. Quietly, awkwardly, and in ways most headlines are too busy screaming to notice, people are beginning to test whether fear still costs what it used to.

Not heroically. Not dramatically. Nobody’s filming Bravery: Season One for Netflix. This stuff’s smaller than that, which somehow makes it more important. Foreign governments are recalibrating instead of panicking. Congress is hedging in weird, nervous ways. Even Republicans, who’ve spent years acting like Trump personally owns the launch codes to their careers, are beginning to poke the electric fence and wonder whether saying “no” still costs what it used to.

That’s where this story starts.

For years, Trump’s foreign policy ran on unpredictability, tariff threats, public humiliation, and enough chaos to make diplomatic meetings feel like somebody handed the drunkest guy at poker a flamethrower and told him to run the fucking casino. The assumption underneath it all was brutally simple: eventually, everybody folds. Eventually, allies swallow the insult sandwich. Eventually, governments decide compliance costs less than conflict and quietly mutter, Fine, whatever the fuck you want.

Except lately, that equation’s started looking shakier.

Governments don’t survive by believing mythology. They survive by spotting patterns. They notice when tariff threats stall out, when courts complicate executive power, when domestic politics gums up follow-through, and when Congress suddenly looks less airtight than advertised. A government that fears you behaves one way. A government that thinks it understands your limits behaves differently. It negotiates harder. Delays. Pushes back. Waits you out. Starts treating you less like a force of nature and more like an exhausting boss everybody complains about after meetings.

That doesn’t mean countries suddenly stopped taking Trump seriously. It means they’re recalibrating.

And recalibration is really just a fancy political word for:

“Maybe this guy doesn’t hit as hard every damn time as everybody keeps pretending.”

Back home, Congress has started making the kind of nervous noises people make right before pretending they meant to question authority all along.

Not brave noises. Let’s not OD on hopium. Not heroic noises. Just weird little politically nervous noises that suddenly start showing up when people aren’t quite as scared shitless as they used to be.

The war powers friction matters because hesitation matters. When Republicans wobble around executive military authority, even temporarily, that tells you something. It doesn’t mean Trump lost the room. It means fear isn’t operating at full voltage.

Same with reconciliation fights. Same with spending battles. Same with visible pushback around Trump’s anti-weaponization fund and the broader discomfort surrounding grievance spending and the kind of ballroom slash slush fund optics that make even loyal Republicans quietly stare at the floor and suddenly rediscover fiscal responsibility.

And let’s be real for a second, Republicans didn’t wake up and discover principles like somebody found an old copy of the Constitution behind the couch cushions.

They discovered consequences.

That’s the crack in the windshield.

For years, resistance looked like career suicide. Now, at least in small ways, lawmakers seem to be stress testing the edges of disobedience and quietly asking:

Okay, but what actually happens if we say no?

Because here’s the dangerous little secret underneath strongman politics people love pretending doesn’t exist:

The moment people survive resistance in public, everybody else starts doing the math.

Foreign governments recalibrate harder. Lawmakers hedge. Donors get nervous. The media grows a little less terrified. The mythology starts taking tiny cracks, and suddenly, everybody notices the guy yelling loudest might not actually be able to punch everybody in the room at once.

What comes next is where this story gets genuinely uncomfortable.

The real danger isn’t resistance.

The real danger is what happens when somebody who built power on intimidation realizes people are starting to test whether the intimidation still works.

Social Security recipients got a 2.8% “raise” this year. Inflation’s running hotter than that. Energy costs jumped. Gas prices climbed. Medicare takes its cut before retirees even touch the damn money. According to federal inflation data, prices rose 3.3% year-over-year in March. So let’s ask the obvious fucking question: if your cost-of-living adjustment loses to the actual cost of living, what exactly are we calling this — a raise or paperwork with better PR?

Because here’s what nobody likes saying out loud: a lot of retirees are staring at this year’s COLA the same way you stare at twenty bucks somebody hands you after quietly borrowing fifty from your wallet.

Technically, money changed hands.

Functionally? You’re still behind.

And before somebody fires up Facebook to scream about lazy seniors expecting yachts and shrimp towers, calm the fuck down. Nobody’s asking for luxury. The argument’s simpler than that: if the government says Social Security is protected from inflation, shouldn’t the protection actually keep up with inflation?

That seems like a pretty low fucking bar.

The part that’ll really piss you off is how this thing actually works.

Most people hear “cost-of-living adjustment” and assume the government measures what retirees spend money on and adjusts checks accordingly. Sounds reasonable. Sounds logical. Sounds like something designed by people who’ve met an actual retired person.

Nope.

The formula behind Social Security COLAs uses CPI-W, a measure built around the spending patterns of urban wage earners and clerical workers — people still in the workforce. Not retirees. Not seniors spending a bigger share of their money on prescriptions, healthcare, utilities, insurance, and the kind of grocery bill that now feels like you accidentally wandered into a luxury boutique for eggs.

Right out of the gate, the system starts getting weird.

The government is effectively measuring inflation for retirees using spending habits that don’t fully reflect retiree life.

That matters.

The COLA retirees got this January wasn’t based on prices today. It was based on inflation measured months earlier. Which means the raise lands after costs have already started sprinting ahead.

Inflation doesn’t politely pause while Washington updates spreadsheets.

By the time the adjustment arrives, retirees are often already absorbing higher costs in real time.

That’s why you keep hearing some version of the same sentence from older Americans:

“I’m getting by, but it’s tighter.”

That sentence should scare the shit out of people.

For millions of Americans, Social Security isn’t extra spending money. It is the money. There’s no magical side hustle waiting in the wings for somebody pushing eighty with arthritis. You don’t suddenly become a crypto influencer called Grandpa Diamond Hands and outrun prescription costs through hustle culture.

You cut back.

You skip little things.

Sometimes you skip things you probably shouldn’t.

And slowly, quietly, life shrinks.

Somebody reading this right now is already muttering, “Fine. But whose fault is inflation?”

Fair question.

Reality’s annoying here.

Presidents don’t control prices with a giant dial hidden under the Oval Office desk labeled MAKE EGGS NORMAL AGAIN. Energy prices move because of global markets, refinery bottlenecks, wars, supply disruptions, shipping costs, investor expectations, and markets generally behaving like caffeinated raccoons fighting over garbage.

But policy choices matter too.

They shape incentives. They affect costs. They influence how painful inflation becomes and how quickly prices settle down. Critics argue that some decisions involving trade, energy, or pressure around interest rates may worsen the price pressures consumers feel directly. Others argue inflation is driven mostly by global disruptions and structural forces bigger than any administration.

Economists can argue over spreadsheets until somebody throws a chair.

Retirees still have to buy groceries.

They experience inflation standing at the pharmacy counter, wondering why a refill suddenly costs more than expected. They experience it at the gas pump. At the checkout line. At the kitchen table with a calculator and a muttered, “Jesus Christ.”
