Amen and Pass the MAGA: Trump’s School Prayer Scam
By The Mayor of Funkytown — Political Writer, Resistance Organizer, and Professional Bullshit Detector
Trump shuffled into the Museum of the Bible this week like a televangelist in search of a fresh revenue stream. Before the so-called White House Religious Liberty Commission (translation: “theocrats with business cards”), he vowed to “protect prayer in schools.”
Now, kids already can pray in school. Nobody’s gonna get tackled by the lunch lady for whispering the Lord’s Prayer over a tater tot. What Trump wants is not liberty — it’s homeroom revival hour, with Uncle Sam holding the collection plate.
🙏 Kids Can Already Pray
This is the biggest scam of the whole thing. Private prayer in school is already legal. Always has been. The Supreme Court made it crystal clear:
“It is no part of the business of government to compose official prayers for any group of the American people.”
— Justice Hugo Black, Engel v. Vitale (1962)
That case struck down New York’s attempt to start the day with a government-written prayer. Fast forward to Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000), and the Court said, yeah, even “student-led” prayers at football games cross the line when they’re effectively school-sponsored.
So the law is simple: your kid can pray anytime, anywhere, so long as it’s voluntary and not shoved down everyone else’s throat. What they can’t do is force the whole class into a mandatory Jesus pep rally.
⛪ Trump, Patron Saint of Hypocrisy
And let’s pause on the absurdity here: Donald J. Trump as defender of prayer? This is a man who treats the Bible like a prop in a hostage video. The same guy who called Communion “my little wine and my little cracker” suddenly wants to play chaplain-in-chief.
If Trump has a Gospel, it’s the Gospel of Grift: Chapter Porn Star, Verse Hush Money. His altar isn’t made of stone — it’s made of gold-plated toilets and unpaid contractors.
But the Christian Right eats it up like it’s the last supper buffet at Mar-a-Lago. Because for them, it’s not about faith. It’s about power.
⚡ This Isn’t About Faith. It’s About Power.
Authoritarians don’t invent new tricks — they recycle old ones. And the oldest one is this: wrap yourself in faith before you march. Crosses first, jackboots later.
Mandatory prayer isn’t about kids finding God. It’s about conditioning them to conflate patriotism with piety, and obedience to country with obedience to Trump. Today it’s a “moment of silence.” Tomorrow it’s creationism in science class, and the day after that it’s history textbooks where slavery was just “unpaid internships with room and board.”
Don’t believe me? Look at Hungary. Look at Poland. Theocracy always comes wearing a smile and a hymn before it drags you by the throat.
📖 The Museum of the Bible: A Perfectly Cynical Stage
Could there have been a more perfect backdrop? A $500 million shrine where piety and politics hold hands and pick your pocket.
Trump preaching about liberty in the Museum of the Bible is like holding a gun show in a children’s hospital: grotesque, tone-deaf, and tailor-made for the headline.
🔥 Why This Matters
When Trump says “protect prayer,” he doesn’t mean protect your prayer — he means protect his version of Christianity, stamped and approved by MAGA. That’s not liberty, that’s religious supremacy with a spray tan.
“The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife… that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries.”
— James Madison
If we don’t hold the line here, we’re not just talking about awkward morning announcements — we’re talking about cracking open the door to a full-blown Christian nationalist state.
✊ The Call to Action
This isn’t a drill, folks. This is the long game. If we roll our eyes and move on, they win by default. Here’s what you can do:
📞 Call your school board. Local fights are where this starts — and where it can be stopped.
💸 Back groups like the ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State. They’re the firewall in the courts.
🗣️ Talk to your kids and grandkids. They’ll be the ones sitting through these forced sermons if we stay silent.
😂 Use ridicule like a weapon. Authoritarians hate being laughed at. Nothing shrinks a bully faster than becoming a punchline.
Trump’s sermon wasn’t about God. It was about obedience. He doesn’t want kids to bow their heads in prayer; he wants them to bow their heads to him. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to watch America trade democracy for a pew in Trump’s Church of the Golden Calf.
