Independence From What, Exactly?
By: The Mayor of Funkytown – Burning the Empire with Style
🎆 Happy 4th of July — Or, as I like to call it: The Great American Gaslight. 🎆
Every year, this country throws a birthday party for itself — red meat on the grill, red, white, and blue in every window, and red state blowhards waxing poetic about "freedom" while waving around Chinese-made flags and guzzling light beer like liberty itself is hiding in the can. It’s loud, it's proud, and it's fundamentally full of shit.
Because I’ll tell you right now — I’m not in a celebratory mood.
And I don’t think anyone with a functioning conscience should be either.
❤️ I Used to Love the 4th of July
Let me be real with you: this used to be one of my favorite holidays.
There was something magical about it as a kid — the fireworks lighting up the night sky, the sound of laughter echoing through backyards, the communal pride of a country that, at least in theory, stood for something noble. I loved the idea of independence. Of freedom. Of self-determination. Of us — imperfect, messy, but trying to become something better.
I believed in it.
I believed the myth because I wanted it to be true.
But the older I got, the harder it became to ignore the rot under the red, white, and blue wrapping paper. The more I learned, the more I saw, the less I could pretend. The more the curtain fell away and the machinery of injustice came into view, the less I could toast to it with a smile.
I didn’t stop celebrating because I hated America.
I stopped because I loved the idea of it too much to keep lying about what it actually is.
🐑 We Were Never Free. We Were Just First to the Lie.
America sells freedom the way McDonald’s sells salads: technically available, but not the point.
This country wasn’t founded on freedom. It was founded on stolen land, built with stolen people, and maintained through stolen labor. The ink on the Declaration of Independence wasn’t even dry before the Founding Fathers went right back to enslaving human beings and denying women, Indigenous nations, and non-landowning white men any voice at all. "All men are created equal" — as long as you were the right kind of man.
Let’s call the 4th what it really is:
A commemoration of a tax revolt by rich white landowners who didn’t want to pay their dues to the British Empire, so they started their own.
A rebellion not for liberation, but for consolidation of power.
They swapped one king for a system of oligarchs who made damn sure only their kind could sit at the table. And we’ve been living in the fallout ever since — dressed up in stars and stripes and sold back to us with a fireworks discount.
💣 The Land of the Free… Unless You're a Woman, Queer, Black, Brown, Poor, or Just Inconvenient
Let’s do a roll call on "freedom," shall we?
Women just lost their bodily autonomy in half the country. Forced births are back, y’all — and they’re parading it around like it’s feminism.
LGBTQ+ Americans are under siege from coast to coast — book bans, bathroom bans, bans on existing. The new American dream is apparently legislated invisibility.
Black and Brown people are still getting harassed, arrested, beaten, and killed by a militarized police force that sees skin tone as probable cause.
Immigrants are being shoved into open-air detention centers in the goddamn Everglades like it’s 1942 all over again.
Journalists and activists are being doxxed, jailed, or surveilled — because the truth is more dangerous than treason now.
And the working class? We’re drowning in debt, drowning in heat, drowning in despair — all while billionaires fly penis-shaped rockets into space and Congress throws birthday cakes to the military-industrial complex.
This ain’t freedom.
It’s feudalism in drag.
🎇 Fireworks Can’t Cover Up Fascism
You can’t light a sparkler bright enough to blind me to what’s happening:
A Supreme Court that acts like a theocratic junta.
A sitting President with full-blown fascist ambitions and no meaningful opposition from his party.
A Republican Party that wants to drag us back to 1850 — barefoot, pregnant, closeted, and gagged.
A Democratic Party that shows up with platitudes when the house is on fire.
They gutted voting rights.
They legalized bribery through Citizens United.
They overturned Roe.
They gave Trump immunity.
They neutered the EPA.
They just blocked nationwide injunctions, meaning lower courts can’t stop federal tyranny anymore.
It’s not a slow creep anymore. It’s a damn sprint toward authoritarianism.
And every bomb bursting in air is just another distraction from the coup already in progress.
🪖 Thank the Troops — But Demand They Fight for Us
Let me make something clear:
We should thank the troops.
We should honor every person who believed they were fighting for our rights, our safety, our values — because a lot of them were. And are. And will.
But what we can’t do anymore is confuse patriotism with blind allegiance. The military isn't sacred. It's a tool. And if that tool is being used to crush civil liberties, intimidate dissent, deport families, or guard oil fields instead of voting booths and public schools, then it’s our duty to say: No. Fight for us. Fight for what we were promised.
Support the troops — by fighting to make sure they’re never again deployed to defend lies.
🧨 Let’s Talk About Real Patriotism
You want to be a patriot? Then stop celebrating myths and start confronting reality.
Don’t wave the flag — burn the lies it covers.
Don’t talk about liberty — fight for it where it matters: the classroom, the ballot box, the picket line, the protest.
Don’t cheer for "the greatest country in the world" — build one that earns the title.
Because here’s the truth they won’t print on any T-shirt at Walmart:
Loving this country means refusing to let it keep killing us.
🎆 I’ll Celebrate Again When…
I’ll celebrate again when women are trusted to make decisions about their bodies.
When queer and trans kids don’t have to read between the lines of legislation to see if they’re still safe next week.
When the cops who kill are arrested and the people they kill get justice.
When no child goes to bed hungry, and no billionaire goes to bed richer, while millions suffer.
When the detention camps are empty, the Supreme Court is ethical, the ballots are counted, the votes are protected, and the people — all people — are finally, actually, truly free.
That’s when I’ll fire up the grill.
That’s when I’ll light the sky.
That’s when I’ll sing the anthem with a chest full of pride instead of ash.
Until then?
This isn't Independence Day.
It's a memorial for what we could have been.
📢 Light the Fireworks, But Burn the Illusions
If you still feel like grilling today, grill your lawmakers.
If you still want to set something off, let it be your rage.
And if you’re looking for something to believe in, believe in each other. Not the flag. Not the fantasy. Not the fireworks.
America doesn’t need your celebration.
It needs your resistance.
Happy Insurgency Day, comrades.
