The Country We Loved Is Gone
By: The Mayor of Funkytown — Burning the Empire with Style
There was a time, not so long ago, when this country still meant something. A time when the American flag stood for ideals larger than a T-shirt graphic or a lawn ornament. When it was more than a prop used by conmen and cowards. When Independence Day felt like more than an excuse for beer bongs, gun shows, and Toby Keith concerts. We stood for something once.
We believed in liberty, even if it was flawed. We believed in the Constitution, even when it was battered. And for those of us who served, bled, or watched someone we love come home in pieces, we did so because we thought we were protecting something worth saving.
But look around now.
This Fourth of July, America is not a nation celebrating freedom. It is a dying empire gasping for breath between court decisions, fascist power grabs, and full-blown autocracy. It is a broken shell of itself, ruled by a sociopath who already overthrew democracy once and was rewarded with a second term, not a prison sentence. We are watching the torch of liberty be extinguished in real time, and too many Americans are too damn comfortable to care.
🧠 This Was Always the Plan
Don’t let anyone tell you this happened by accident.
This wasn’t a one-man wrecking ball or a glitch in the system. This was a long game—a multi-decade conservative strategy to dismantle democracy, one court seat, one voting restriction, one propaganda network at a time.
It started in the ashes of Nixon. When he resigned in disgrace, Republicans didn’t walk away humbled—they walked away pissed. They vowed to never let a Republican president be taken down by the rule of law again. So they got to work.
They built the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society.
They turned school boards and local races into political battlegrounds.
They stacked the judiciary with loyal foot soldiers who looked the part but followed the playbook.
They used Reagan to sell the lie that government is the problem, then gutted it until that lie became real.
And let’s be clear: Reagan has a lot of blood on his hands.
He eliminated the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, which opened the floodgates for Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and the entire right-wing disinformation ecosystem to take hold without accountability.
He preached trickle-down economics—that fraudulent con job that handed tax breaks to billionaires while gutting unions and hollowing out the middle class. It didn’t lift people up. It ground them down.
He slashed social programs under the guise of "fiscal responsibility," turning poverty into a moral failing and wealth into a virtue.
He ignored the AIDS crisis while an entire generation of Americans died.
He armed death squads in Central America, funneled weapons to Iran, and laundered money through black ops while smiling for the camera.
He weaponized the Department of Justice into a political tool and escalated the war on drugs into a war on Black and Brown communities.
Reagan wasn’t some genial grandpa with a cowboy hat. He was the velvet-gloved fist of corporate fascism, and we’re still choking on the consequences.
Every conservative milestone since has followed his blueprint: privatize everything, deregulate the powerful, punish the poor, and gaslight the public with a smile.
They used gerrymandering to make elections meaningless.
They used voter ID laws and voter roll purges to make sure the wrong people couldn’t vote.
They packed talk radio, cable news, and the internet with enough rage, racism, and disinformation to fracture reality itself.
They impeached Clinton for lying about sex, but did nothing while Bush tortured, Cheney lied us into war, and Trump sold out the entire country.
And when Trump lost in 2020? They didn’t regroup. They reloaded.
They filed thousands of bogus lawsuits. They pushed the Big Lie. They purged election officials. They embraced militias. They sent mobs to the Capitol. And when the smoke cleared, they took over statehouses, bullied judges, and prepared for Trump’s triumphant return.
We watched the Republican Party transform from a conservative movement into an authoritarian death cult, and now here we are: Second term Trump. Zero accountability. And a nation hurtling toward permanent minority rule.
🤯 How the Hell Did We Let It Happen?
Let’s be honest: Trump didn’t break America. He was the funhouse mirror reflection of what was already cracked and rotting underneath. The racism. The greed. The nationalism wrapped in Bible verses and hollowed-out patriotism.
We let Fox News poison an entire generation.
We let corporations buy both parties.
We let Citizens United turn democracy into an auction.
We let billionaires play god while people ration insulin.
We let cops become soldiers, and protestors become enemies of the state.
We let our elections be hacked, our schools defunded, and our future mortgaged to the next quarterly profit report.
We let ourselves get distracted by bullshit scandals while the real traitors rewrote the rulebook. We watched Bush lie us into war, watched Obama bail out Wall Street, watched Trump piss on the Constitution—and now we’re living through his second term, where he’s not even pretending to care about rules anymore.
And the Supreme Court? That nine-robed death cult just declared the president to be effectively untouchable. They gave him immunity for crimes committed in office. They blocked lower courts from issuing nationwide injunctions against him, even in the face of clear constitutional violations. They made it harder to file class-action lawsuits against the federal government, because why let the people hold power accountable when you can kneel to the throne?
And now, with Trump back in power, the damage is coming faster than ever. His so-called Big Beautiful Bill is a hand grenade disguised as legislation. It slashes Medicaid, throws millions off healthcare, and hands billion-dollar tax breaks to the same elites lighting cigars with your rent money. And here's the kicker: it hurts his base the most. Rural Americans. Veterans. Seniors. The same folks who cheered him on at rallies are getting steamrolled by the very policies they voted for.
And thanks to the Supreme Court's latest power grab, no lower court can issue a nationwide injunction to stop it. Even if one brave federal judge sees how fucked up it is, their ruling can't protect the rest of the country. It's checkmate.
The judicial escape hatch has been sealed. The president is above the law. And if you're poor, sick, or part of any community Trump hates—congratulations, you’re collateral damage.
🛑 This Isn’t Just a Slippery Slope—We Already Fell Off the Cliff
Let’s stop pretending we’re one election away from fixing this. We are in the middle of a slow-motion coup, and the brakes have been cut. Trump didn’t lose power. He consolidated it. He has the military worshipping him. ICE is rounding up migrants like cattle. Governors are
turning red states into laboratories of cruelty. And a GOP that has fully submitted to his will, out of fear, greed, or stupidity.
They have banned books, criminalized education, attacked LGBTQ+ Americans, arrested Democratic lawmakers, and threatened to dismantle the very idea of free and fair elections. All while hoarding guns and preaching about the tyranny they claim to oppose.
Where the fuck are the so-called patriots now? Where is the NRA, that promised to rise up if the government ever became tyrannical? Silent. Complicit. Drunk on authoritarianism and clinging to power like a tick on the spine of a dying dog.
This is not the land of the free. It is a corporate-run surveillance state where journalists are targets, whistleblowers are hunted, and the average American is too broke, tired, or medicated to fight back.
🎆 The Fireworks Are a Distraction
On July 4th, the skies will light up. But the people in power know that the louder the explosions, the easier it is to hide the real ones.
Kids are still in cages.
Mothers are still being denied life-saving abortions.
Families are losing their homes to climate disaster while fossil fuel companies get richer.
Democracy is being dismantled with pens and gavels while the masses grill hot dogs and scroll TikTok.
This isn’t a holiday anymore. It’s a funeral dressed as a parade.
🔥 So What the Hell Do We Do Now?
We face a brutal truth: The country we loved is gone.
But here’s the thing about empires: they only stay dead if we let them. The ashes of failed democracies can still be fertile ground for something new—if we have the guts to burn the old myths down first.
We cannot vote our way out of fascism, but we can organize our way out.
We cannot rely on courts, but we can rely on each other.
We cannot pretend anymore that the cavalry is coming.
We are the goddamn cavalry.
That means:
Supporting labor strikes, walkouts, and mutual aid networks.
Defending marginalized communities with more than words.
Shutting down ICE facilities and exposing their brutality.
Using every legal tool we still have—and preparing for what happens when those tools are gone.
Making noise. Raising hell. Calling out complicity.
And yes, refusing to celebrate a country that has stopped earning the right to be celebrated.
This isn’t about giving up. It’s about waking up.
It’s about recognizing that loyalty to your country doesn’t mean obedience to your government. It means loyalty to its people, its ideals, and its future.
We have to become ungovernable.
We have to stop playing nice with fascists.
We have to stop pretending that this is normal.
Because if we don’t fight like hell now, there won’t be another Fourth of July worth remembering.
Let this be the year we stop celebrating what America used to be.
And start building the country it was supposed to be.
Happy Fucking Independence Day.
