Editorial Note
There are stories where everybody picks a side before they’ve finished the headline. This isn’t one of them. This isn’t really a fight over whether social media is good or bad for kids; it’s a question of whether we’ve spent fifteen years running an experiment on an entire generation without ever stopping to ask what it might cost them down the road. A new study doesn’t settle that. But goddamn if it doesn’t force us to ask better questions than the ones we’ve been asking.
For years, every time somebody raised concerns about kids and social media, the conversation ran the same tired script. One side swore smartphones were destroying an entire generation. The other side rolled its eyes and said it was just adults bitching about whatever the kids were into this time, same as it ever was. Reality, as usual, didn’t give a shit about either script.
Researchers tracking more than 5,000 students found that kids who started using social media around eleven or twelve later scored worse on standardized tests than kids who waited until fourteen or fifteen. By sixteen, the math gap worked out to roughly six months of learning, just gone. The researchers controlled for prior grades, family background, parental education, all of it, which makes this a hell of a lot harder to wave off as “it’s just poor kids” or “it’s just rich kids.” And to their credit, the researchers didn’t oversell it either. The easy move here is to blame social media and call it a day. Might even be half right. But I don’t think that’s the real story. The real story is attention, plain and simple. Every one of these companies is fighting for exactly one thing, and it isn’t your wellbeing; it’s your time. Not because the people running them are evil. Because that’s the whole business model. The longer you stay on the app, the more ads you see, and the more ads you see, the more money lands in their pocket. Every notification, every autoplay, every little red bubble screaming for your attention, it’s all built to answer one question: how do we get this person to look at the screen one more goddamn time?
Adults lose that fight constantly, and we’ve got fully developed brains. Now hand that same fight to an eleven-year-old whose impulse control is still under construction. That’s not a fair fight. That’s not even close to a fair fight.
What’s interesting about this study is that it wasn’t just counting screen time. Kids who got on social media earlier were checking their phones during homework, during class, right before bed, the second they woke up. So maybe the real damage isn’t the number of hours logged; it’s getting yanked out of whatever you’re doing every few minutes, over and over, all day long. You know that feeling when you sit down to do your taxes and end up checking Facebook every thirty seconds? Now try learning algebra like that.
Here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud. Parents never really stood a chance in this fight. Try telling your twelve-year-old they can’t have Instagram while every single friend they’ve got is already on it. See how that conversation goes over dinner. Schools had no playbook. Tech companies kept insisting everything was fine. Politicians barely understood what they were even trying to regulate. Meanwhile millions of families were left guessing, because the evidence just didn’t exist yet.
Now it does. Or at least more of it does.
That doesn’t mean the answer is torching every phone in America. Technology isn’t the villain here. The same device that yanks a kid’s attention away from homework can also teach them to code, walk them through calculus, translate a language, connect a family across three continents, or introduce a kid to some interest they never would’ve stumbled into otherwise.
The question was never whether tech belongs in a kid’s life. It already does, that ship sailed a long time ago. The real question is whether products built from the ground up to hijack attention belong in the hands of kids who haven’t developed the wiring yet to manage it. Those are two completely different conversations, and we keep collapsing them into one.
That’s what makes the timing on this one interesting. For years we measured social media almost entirely through the mental health lens. Anxiety. Depression. Self-esteem. Cyberbullying. Don’t get me wrong. Those conversations still matter, but this study asks something a lot simpler, something every parent and every teacher already understands in their gut: can a kid actually learn anything when they’re getting yanked away from it every few minutes? No ideology required to answer that one.
THE RECORD
Researchers followed more than 5,000 Italian students over multiple years.
Students who started using social media at ages 11-12 later scored significantly lower in math and Italian than students who waited until 14-15.
The gap worked out to roughly six months of learning.
Researchers controlled for prior achievement and family background, but were upfront that this shows correlation, not proof of causation.
Constant phone checking during homework, school, and bedtime looked like one of the biggest drivers behind the lower scores.

Bullshit Detector
You’re going to hear two lazy takes on this:
The first one says this study proves social media is wrecking an entire generation. Bullshit. It proves no such thing.
The second one says this is just another moral panic; every generation freaks out about the new technology, and this is no different. That one used to hold up better than it does now, because the evidence stopped being vibes a while back.
The honest read is less satisfying than either one, because it’s more complicated than either one. Technology isn’t the problem. Business models built to hijack and monetize attention might be. And when you point those business models at kids whose brains are still under construction, don’t act shocked when the bill comes due.
Maybe the mistake was never handing kids the phones. Maybe the mistake was assuming we’d find out what it cost them before they already paid the price.
