🧨 The Lies That Are Killing America
By The Mayor of Funkytown — Political Writer, Resistance Organizer, and Truth Teller in a Nation of Gaslighters
Every day, Americans are bombarded with lies so corrosive, so deliberately cynical, that they begin to corrode the very idea of truth. It’s not just spin, not just politics as usual — it’s a carefully engineered propaganda campaign designed to make people doubt their eyes, their minds, and their capacity to resist.
Let’s lay it bare.
🏛 DC Is Not a Hell Hole
The nation’s capital is flawed, yes. It struggles with inequality, housing costs, and crime like every major city. But the MAGA chorus calling it a “hell hole” isn’t talking about infrastructure or safety. They’re sneering at democracy itself — at the very heart of American governance. To call DC a hellhole is to brand self-rule, accountability, and pluralism as failures. That’s not critique. That’s sabotage.
“When authoritarians want to crush a system, they first convince you it’s already dead.” — Timothy Snyder, historian and author of On Tyranny
🌍 Ukraine Did Not Start the War
No amount of Carlson-style propaganda can rewrite history. Putin invaded Ukraine. Period.

💰 Tariffs Are Taxes — And You Pay
When Trump brags about tariffs, he frames them as some masterstroke of strength — a punishment for foreign nations. But Americans pay those costs at the register, not China, not Mexico, not Europe.
“By and large, tariffs are likely to be passed through to American consumers.” — Robert Lawrence, Harvard Kennedy School (source)
“Tariff is… like a tax… American consumers will pay the price… tariffs are costly to the American consumer in the end.” — Şebnem Kalemli-Özcan, Brown University (source)
“Tariffs are a regressive tax that redistributes from poor to rich.” — Robert Reich, former U.S. Labor Secretary (source)
👶 Fourteen-Year-Olds Are Not Adults
Let’s be very clear: no society that forces children into adult roles is a healthy one. Pretending otherwise is not only cruel but designed to serve a darker agenda — stripping away protections, eroding labor laws, and leaving young people vulnerable to exploitation.
“Child labor is a denial of a child’s right to childhood. It is work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children.” — International Labour Organization (ILO) (source)
🗽 Immigrants Are Not Scapegoats
Immigrants are not responsible for America’s inequality, for crumbling infrastructure, or for the greed of billionaires. But scapegoating them works as a political distraction, and the right has perfected this dark art. Every authoritarian regime throughout history has needed its “outsider villain.” Trumpism is no different.
“Immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than the U.S.-born.” — Cato Institute (source)
“Immigrants are not the problem. They are part of the solution.” — Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State
🤡 Trump Is Neither Competent Nor Coherent
This one should be self-evident. The man lies as easily as he breathes, slurs through speeches, contradicts himself within the same sentence, and makes policy by tantrum. And yet millions cling to him as if he were a savior. That blind loyalty isn’t patriotism. It’s a cult.
“The president’s statements were often so incoherent that staff had to interpret his meaning after the fact.” — John Bolton, former National Security Adviser (from The Room Where It Happened)
“We are witnessing the first American president who does not read, cannot listen, and will not learn.” — Tony Schwartz, ghostwriter of The Art of the Deal
⚠️ What’s Really at Stake
These aren’t just talking points. They’re the foundation stones of a new American authoritarianism.
When we accept lies — that DC is unlivable, that Ukraine started a war, that immigrants are to blame, that children are expendable, that tariffs don’t hurt us — we let propaganda replace reality.
“Post-truth is pre-fascism.” — Timothy Snyder, historian
And once reality is gone, democracy is next.
This is the slow destruction of the country — not through bombs or invasions, but through erosion of truth itself.
🚨 The Call to Action
We must fight lies with relentless truth. We must refuse to let disinformation dictate the future. That means fact-checking, voting, organizing, amplifying reality, and refusing to let despair make us passive.
Because the more we shrug off lies as “just politics,” the closer we drift to a country where truth has no meaning at all.
