Trump’s Texas Power Grab: Gerrymandering, Mail-In Voting Lies, and the March Toward Authoritarianism
By The Mayor of Funkytown — Political Writer, Resistance Organizer, and Enemy of Rigged Maps
🔥 Trump’s “Big Win” Is Democracy’s Loss
Donald Trump strutted onto Truth Social last night, chest puffed out, typing in all caps like a dictator declaring victory over his own people. His announcement? Texas Republicans have passed measures that will allegedly hand them five new Congressional seats.
To the casual reader, Trump’s screed reads like political cheerleading. But let’s be clear: what he’s celebrating is not democracy in action — it’s democracy under siege.
“When the rules are rigged, winning isn’t victory — it’s theft dressed up as triumph.”
— The Insurgency
🗺 Gerrymandering: How Minority Rule Becomes Law
Trump praised Texas for “never letting us down.” Translation: Texas Republicans, led by Gov. Greg Abbott, have once again perfected the art of gerrymandering, twisting the electoral map into a grotesque caricature of representation.
Here’s the truth:
Texas gained new seats in Congress because of explosive population growth driven by Latinos, Black communities, and immigrants.
Instead of honoring that reality, Abbott’s GOP cracked these communities apart and diluted their voices so thoroughly that the very people responsible for Texas’s growth will have the least say in its future.
Every new seat Trump brags about is a stolen seat, ripped from the hands of Texans who will now be treated as second-class citizens in their own democracy.
“Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans are rigging the system to hold onto power because they can’t win on ideas, can’t win on policy, and can’t win on truth.”
— Beto O’Rourke
📉 The Lie of “More Seats = Less Crime”
Trump thundered that more Republican seats would bring “less crime, a great economy, and a STRONG SECOND AMENDMENT.” It’s a carnival-barker pitch, as empty as the man delivering it.
Red states lead the nation in violent crime rates. Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas all outpace California and New York.
Texas’s “great economy” is built on low-wage jobs, union-busting, and a refusal to invest in healthcare or education — leaving millions uninsured and schools underfunded.
And a “strong Second Amendment” in Texas has already translated into dead children in classrooms.
“Abbott cares more about pleasing gun lobbyists than protecting Texas families. He’s turned this state into a shooting gallery.”
— Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Judge
📬 Mail-In Voting: Trump’s Favorite Bogeyman
Trump’s obsession with killing mail-in voting is not just a personal vendetta — it’s a calculated war on the working class, the elderly, and communities of color.
Mail-in voting has been a lifeline for soldiers, seniors, and people with disabilities since the Civil War.
It is used safely by over 30 countries, including U.S. allies like France, Germany, and even Russia.
In 2020, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security found zero evidence of widespread fraud.
So why target it? Because Trump knows mail-in voting increases turnout, and high turnout is his kryptonite.
“When leaders fear the ballot more than the bullet, democracy is already on life support.”
— Sherrilyn Ifill, civil rights lawyer
🗳 The Paper Ballot Con Game
Trump demanded a shift to paper ballots, calling them “cheaper, faster, and more reliable.” Another lie.
Most states already use paper ballots as the record of vote. What Trump, Abbott, and DeSantis really want isn’t paper — it’s chaos.
Hand-counting ballots is a logistical nightmare, riddled with human error.
Delayed results give Trump the opening to scream “fraud!” and whip his followers into another January 6-style frenzy.
“Authoritarians do not need to win elections honestly — they only need to convince enough people that the results cannot be trusted.”
— Anne Applebaum, historian
🏴 Florida Joins the Fray: DeSantis’s Role
Trump didn’t just cheer for Texas. He name-dropped Florida, Indiana, and “others.” And when he points to Florida, he’s pointing to Gov. Ron DeSantis — the man who has made voter suppression an art form.
DeSantis has:
Created a state-run election police force designed to intimidate voters.
Pushed laws that make it harder to vote by mail and limit ballot drop boxes.
Overseen gerrymanders so aggressive that even Florida’s own courts called them unconstitutional.
“Ron DeSantis doesn’t just want to control who votes. He wants to control which votes count.”
— Marc Elias, voting rights attorney
DeSantis may style himself as Trump’s rival, but on this front, they’re allies: building a system where elections are decided before the first ballot is ever cast.
🏴 The Authoritarian Blueprint
Trump, Abbott, and DeSantis are not freelancing. They’re executing a coordinated authoritarian blueprint:
Gerrymander aggressively to lock in Republican seats even when they lose the popular vote.
Suppress mail-in voting to reduce turnout from groups hostile to MAGA.
Sow distrust in the electoral system until only Trump and his cronies are seen as “legitimate.”
“This is not conservative governance. It is the blueprint of authoritarianism.”
— The Insurgency
⚡ The Resistance Must Match the Fire
This isn’t just about one state, one map, or one election cycle. It’s about the survival of democracy itself.
We must fund and support lawsuits that challenge these maps at the state and federal level.
We must pressure Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013.
We must organize locally, because gerrymanders are drawn in statehouses, not in Washington.
And above all, we must stay loud. Silence is complicity.
“The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.”
— Dante Alighieri
Trump, Abbott, and DeSantis are betting on exhaustion — that we’ll be too tired, too disillusioned, too beaten down to resist. They’re wrong.
👉 We are pushing for 2,000 subscribers by September 1st because the fight ahead demands an army of informed resisters. Subscribe, share, and take your stand.
✊ This is not politics as usual. This is democracy’s last stand — and history will remember who fought back.
