They don’t ask why the drought always precedes the auction, or why the storm always arrives the same week the hands need an excuse for culling. They simply deal with the rain, curse the mud, and accuse the clouds of moral failure. The rest of us look for irrigation channels, satellite maps, and the names of the men who bought futures contracts six months ago.
The normals argue about culture because they lack the instruments to perceive power. Culture is what you fight over when you’ve lost control of the levers. Institutions are what you capture when you intend to keep power long after the ballots and hashtags have faded into compost. Democracies produce culture fighters; autocracies produce engineers, number crunchers, and men whose primary skill is absorbing oxygen inside the bureaucracy without ever becoming visible.
Trump is not a genius in any dimension that matters to posterity, but his project benefits from a structural insight: permanent power in the modern state does not require censorship or pogroms; it requires control over time, bodies, belief, and enforcement. If you can command those four domains, elections become trivia, and opposition becomes an aesthetic preference for the powerless.
What moved power this week was not the circus about men eating raw poultry as proof of courage against the “tyranny of food safety.” That was merely comedy: a tribe attempting to differentiate itself from the herd by ingesting pathogens. The real action was monetary, regulatory, biological, and territorial. Those are the quadrants where modern authoritarianism secures permanence.
